Your Best Shot, May 15

Today's Best Shot comes from reader Arvic Macapagal who lives off Homestead Road in Chapel Hill. "I took this photo at my house late 2012. I came home one day to find this enormous spider, clearly a die-hard CHHS Tigers fan, engineering this curious web pattern. Research reveals it to be an Argiope aurantia; commonly, Black and yellow garden spider. Pleased for its placid nature, I leaned in and took this snap. Hope you enjoy!" Your Best Shot, May 12

Today's Best Shot comes from Terry Jones of Durham. "I took this photo of the interior of St. Mary's Chapel in Hillsborough. Since the chapel was closed, I cleaned off a window pane near the altar and snapped this image with my iPhone. The glass reflected the trees and sky behind me and appear as part of the interior of the chapel. I was amazed." Published: May. 11, 2013 7:00 PM | Full story

Today's Best Shot comes from Jason Damweber, who lives in the Finley Forest neighborhood in Chapel Hill. "I took this picture as the sun was setting over the Coinjock Bay in Currituck, N.C. We'd spent most of the cold winter's day outside around the bonfire - as evidenced by the camping chairs – which you can still see smoldering in the shot. Today’s Best Shot comes from Susan Lutz of Chapel Hill. “I took this picture while hiking the Battle Branch trail from the Community Center to UNC campus. Our good friends Jack and Kathy Kemp were visiting from Ohio, it was 70 degrees in January and all seemed right in the world. Jack Kemp (11), holds my girls Claire Lutz (13), Kate Lutz (8), and Quinn Lutz (11) in the palm of his hand. I love how Jack seems like he is concentrating so hard to perform such a feat!” Published: May. 4, 2013 7:00 PM | Full story

Today's Best Shot comes from Dan Kaufer of Chapel Hill. 'I was out walking my dog at the crack of dawn on New Year's Eve. I noticed an eerie glow to my left coming from behind me. When I turned, looked up, and saw this view, it struck me that it looked more like a sunset than a sunrise. A fitting way to start the ultimate day of the year.' Your Best Shot, April 28

Today's Best Shot comes from reader Philip Sloane of Chapel Hill: "We had to take down a dead oak tree in our backyard and called in a tree removal expert. To minimize damage caused by felling trees the traditional way, tree surgeons will climb a tree and bring it down piece by piece. Our backyard slopes downhill, so I was almost at eye level with the climber and caught the moment when a section he had cut began to fall. For safety, the climber is also roped to a nearby healthy tree -- you can see the rope extending up and to the right on this photo." Published: Apr. 27, 2013 12:00 AM | Full story

Your Best Shot April 24

Today's Best Shot comes from reader Karen Jenkins: "Briggy, my Morkie (Maltese/Yorkie), was uncomfortable with the straps on her carseat. I took the carseat in the house to adjust the straps but since Briggy is very possessive about her carseat, I was unable make any adjustments. Remembering that the fire departments check carseats, I took Briggy on a field trip to Fire Station 2 on Hamilton Road in Chapel Hill. Firefighter Roberts, in the hat, checked the straps. Firefighter Drayton was an instant hit with Briggy and both “girls” played in the station so the carseat was forgotten and the strap adjustments could be made. Lt. Russell oversaw this new activity as his department had never before adjusted a carseat for a dog!" Published: Apr. 23, 2013 7:00 PM | Full story

Today's Best Shot comes from Greg Lind: "I am sending you a photo taken from our kitchen window on the morning of Jan. 26. We don't normally see bluebirds on our regular feeder, but I had put out some extra sunflower seeds in that cracked pot base because of the way ice was covering everything. Bluebirds showed up and managed to stay long enough for me to get my Pentax Kx, get the 55-300mm zoom lens on, and catch this shot." Published: Feb. 26, 2013 7:00 PM | Full story

Your Best Shot, Feb. 24

Today's Best Shot comes from Karen Bender of Raleigh, who titles it 'Rare First Edition': "Apparently life in a bookstore is no page turner. Blissfully asleep in the shop window of The Bookshop on Franklin Street, this orange tabby is completely oblivious to both his edified environment and the colorful display he inhabits. Nor does he notice the clusters of visitors who stop to ooo and ah at him. A sign outside cautions passersby not to tap on the glass." Published: Feb. 23, 2013 7:00 PM | Full story

Your Best Shot, Feb. 20

Today's Best Shot comes from Perry Collette. "This is my daughter Carly, an East Chapel Hill High senior. She participated in the Charlotte Avon Breast Cancer walk again this fall. She walked the equivalent of one and a half marathons in just two days (39.3 miles), which is more than an average person walks in an entire month. She and her teammates were the top fundraisers, putting together $61,000 between them. The event overall raised $1.75 million ($125,000 went to Duke Hospital). The photo is her crossing the finish line with a friend she met on the walk. The organizers pointed out that someone is diagnosed with breast cancer every 3 minutes. So, they hand out a sash every three minutes to someone throughout the weekend. That is why Carly's sash in the photo says ‘3 minutes’ on it.” Published: Feb. 19, 2013 7:00 PM | Full story
