Yes, that is Eleanor Roosevelt sitting in Danziger’s restaurant in downtown Chapel Hill with Frank Porter Graham, right, and three unidentified people (let us know if you know who they are) in this photograph taken in February 1950. Roosevelt, who visited Chapel Hill three times, was here to give a series of lectures on American citizenship; she used Danziger’s as an example of an immigrant’s success story. "Chapel Hill stays with me as a beautiful memory," she said of her time in town.
This shot is among the artifacts the Chapel Hill Museum has gathered for a permanent exhibit on the history of Franklin Street, set to open in October. The museum is continuing to gather items for the exhibit. While monetary contributions are always welcomed, the museum is seeking photos, documents, letters or artifacts connected to Franklin Street.
