The Canada School was the first pre-collegiate private school in Chapel Hill. In 1909, Chapel Hillians voted in the first school tax and the school was purchased for public use. In the photo is the graduating class of 1898 in front of John Canada's Canada School at the corner of Franklin and Columbia streets. Second from right in the back row is Louis Graves. After graduating from the Canada School and UNC, he began his career as a reporter for The New York Times. He returned home in 1923 to establish The Chapel Hill Weekly, the forerunner of today's Chapel Hill News.
