Edward Gustav Danziger, a native of Austria, came to the United States in March 1939 with only $4 to his name. Before coming to America he had been a wealthy confectionery cafe owner in Vienna. Danziger moved to Chapel Hill in April of that year and rented the space where Gooch's Restaurant had once been on Franklin Street. On Sept. 12, 1939, Danziger opened his cafe on Franklin, serving American and Viennese coffee, cider, sandwiches, pastries, ice cream and a variety of candies. Students adored the new addition to Franklin Street. Danziger became something of a celebrity on Franklin Street, warmly known by the students as "Papa D."Who else was important to Franklin Street's history?
