CARRBORO -- Carrboro residents Tracey Olivetto and Jerry Stifelman are aiming to free themselves from air conditioning this summer. While others in the area are cranking up the thermostat, this ecologically conscious couple are rationing themselves. The couple allowed themselves six hours a week in June, was shooting for eight hours in July and is planning on 10 hours a week this month. The couple run the air conditioning for half an hour before bed, just to get the built-up hot air out, and to create a comfortable sleeping atmosphere. They have also erected awnings to shade their windows. The benefits are not just ecological, as Tracey explains: "This has been easier than I expected, we're saving money every day, and I can hear the wildlife at night!"About one-sixth of electricity in the United States is used to cool buildings, so Tracey and Jerry's efforts could have a huge impact if adopted more widely.
