  • Alex J. Moore of Chapel Hill has been selected senior cadet officer for the 2006-07 academic year at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va. Moore is a first lieutenant with Bravo Company. He is the son of James and Carol Moore.
  • Emily Jessup, Miranda Jones, Holly Thompson and Emily Trabert, all of Chapel Hill, have received the Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest achievement for Girl Scouts 11-14. The award symbolizes outstanding accomplishments and a commitment to excellence in the areas of leadership, community service, career planning and personal development.

    Jessup organized and hosted an overnight event for younger Girl Scouts in Orange County. Participants took part in activities such as bicycling, roller skating and general fitness. She is the daughter of Valerie Bateman and Robert Jessup Jr. of Chapel Hill and attends East Chapel Hill High School. She is a member of Orange County Girl Scout Troop 47, advised by Sue Wolf and Becky Waibel.

    For the Silver Award project, Jones taught younger Girl Scouts and attendees of the Chatham County Fair about Girl Scout history and Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of Girl Scouting. She is the daughter of Sue and Randy Jones of Chapel Hill and attends Northwood High School. She is a member of Chatham County Girl Scout Troop 941, advised by Sondra Solomon and Suzanne Jones.

    Thompson attended a class to learn how to build specific bird houses for her Silver Award project. Then, at home, she built 16 houses to donate to the City of Durham Parks and Recreation Department. She is the daughter of Laurie Long Thompson and Dale Thompson of Chapel Hill. She is a member of Chatham County Girl Scout Troop 54, advised by Jane Kaman.

    For her Silver Award project, Trabert made a dozen cloth bags filled with toiletries she collected from peers and neighbors. She donated the bags to the Orange County Friends of the Department of Social Services. She is the daughter of Tom and Mary Trabert of Chapel Hill and attends East Chapel Hill High School. She is an individually registered Girl Scout.

    The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award a girl can earn as a Cadette Girl Scout. This award recognizes the efforts of girls who are in grades 6-9, or are ages 11-14, in a range of Girl Scout and community experiences, as well as recognizing their commitment to better their lives and the lives of others. Each girl working to achieve the Girl Scout Silver Award must complete four requirements that will help her build leadership and living skills, explore career possibilities, and make a commitment to improving herself. The final requirement is to design and carry out a project that takes a minimum of 30 hours to complete.

  • Ruth Miller, special services coordinator at the UNC-Chapel Hill Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute, received a 2006 N.C. State Employees' Award for Excellence, the highest honor for a state employee.

    Miller has been a state employee for 14 years and coordinates services for children with disabilities at the FPG Child Care and Family Program. The award acknowledges outstanding accomplishments that do not fall entirely within the scope of normal duties.

    FPG is a multidisciplinary institute at Carolina. For 40 years, FPG research and outreach has helped shape how the nation cares for and educates young children.

  • Laura Sather has been hired as an account executive for the Woodbine Agency in Charlotte. She has worked with Leo Burnett in London, Young and Rubicam in New York City and as corporate marketing specialist for Wachovia Bank in Charlotte. Her parents are Randy Sally Sather of Chapel Hill.
  • Charles S. Britt of Chapel Hill has been selected as a platoon leader for the 2006-07 academic year at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va. Britt is a second lieutenant with Delta Company. He is the son of Bob and Robin Britt.
  • Louis Vaught of Chapel Hill, son of Mike Vaught and Lynne Bresler, has been selected to participate in the 2006 N.C. Middle School Honors Chorus in Winston-Salem He is an eighth-grader at Cary Academy. This is his second year as tenor in the Honors Chorus and his third year participating in the chorus.
