- Bob Hall of Orange County has received the 2006 Advocacy Friend Award from AARP North Carolina.Hall is director of Democracy North Carolina, a nonpartisan research organization and advocacy center. He has served on commissions, provided expert testimony in court cases on election law and consulted with officials in a dozen states on voting rights and campaign finance reform.
- The Friends of the Pittsboro Memorial Library (www.pittsborolibraryfriends.org) was one of five friends groups given the Francis B. Reid award for outstanding service to their library and their community. A certificate and a $100 check were presented at the annual meeting of the Friends of North Carolina Public Libraries on Nov. 4.The organization was recognized for the energy it put into existing programs while also initiating new programs, such as establishing a scholarship for a Central Carolina Community College student studying Library and Information Technology, fundraising for the destroyed Pass Christian (Miss.) Public Library, and laying groundwork for a new joint-use public/community college library, now in the planning phase.
- Appalachian State University student Virginia Bates of Chapel Hill received the inaugural North Carolina Campus Compact (NCCC) Community Impact Student Award during the annual NCCC Student Conference held Nov. 11 at N.C. State University.Bates was one of 21 college students from across North Carolina to be recognized for their outstanding achievements. Additionally, Bates was named as one of two students from North Carolina to be nominated for National Campus Compact's Howard R. Swearer Humanitarian Award.Bates is a senior human services psychology major and a business minor. Some of her volunteer work includes serving as chair of Appalachian's Dance Marathon and co-chair of the Student Service-Learning Advisory Board, and designing and leading two consecutive Alternative Spring Break trips.
- Eva Mamak, a doctoral student in the UNC School of Psychology, has received the James J. Gallagher Dissertation Award for her research into early childhood professional development and program quality.Mamak will use the $1,500 award to assist her study of the Partners for Literacy curriculum, which was used in a recent national evaluation of the Even Start program. Her dissertation examines how well teachers can immediately use a curriculum in the classroom after receiving training; does on-site consultation and follow-up training improve implementation of the curriculum; and what factors encourage teachers to use a curriculum as it was designed.
- Maggie Connolly, director of the Frank Porter Graham Child Care Program, and Allen Ryan, an FPG data manager, have received the James J. Gallagher Award in recognition of their exemplary attitude and commitment to the FPG community.
- Will Stanley, an Earlham College senior and son of Faye and Chris Stanley of Chapel Hill, completed Earlham's Wilderness Introduction to Caving Course.
- Stanley learned the basic skills of caving. The course included pre-trip meetings and culminated with a weekend caving trip on Nov. 4-5 to southern Indiana, a world-class caving destination.Earlham is a liberal arts college in Richmond, Ind.
