- Michael K. Lewis of Chapel Hill recently completed a fall internship in the office of U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole. He is the son of Michael and Patti Lewis and a 2005 graduate of Chapel Hill High School. He attends Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
- Sarah E. Chamberlin of Hillsborough has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Bucknall University in Lewisburg, Pa. To make the dean's list, a student must receive a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher. Chamberlin is the daughter of Robert and Jeanne Chamberlin, and a 2006 graduate of Durham Academy Upper School.
- Barry M. Popkin has been named the first Carla Smith Chamblee distinguished professor of global nutrition at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, effective Jan. 1. The professorship is awarded to a faculty member who focuses on global nutrition.Popkin, who has been a Carolina School of Public Health faculty member since 1977, is director of the university's Inter-Disciplinary Obesity Center and a fellow with the Carolina Population Center.
- Popkin conducts global research on the patterns and determinants of shifts in dietary intake, physical activity and body composition that are occurring in the developing world, collectively called the nutrition transition. He has studied these trends in many countries, including China, Russia, the Philippines, South Africa and Brazil.
- Jonathan Boreyko of Chapel Hill has received faculty honors for the spring semester of 2006 from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. To receive the citation a student must achieve a grade-point average of 3.667 or better with no grade below B minus.
- Jee Eun Ahn of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list for the fall semester at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. To make the list, a student must be ranked in the top 10 percent of the class or have a grade-point average of 3.75 or higher and take at least 12 semester hours.
- George Lensing Jr., Bowman and Gordon Gray professor of English, has received the UNC General Alumni Association's 2007 Faculty Service Award. The award recognizes Carolina faculty members whose service has had a lasting impact on the university and the association.A leading scholar of modern American poetry and an expert on Wallace Stevens, Lensing has been on the faculty for 37 years. He came to UNC in 1969 after receiving a doctorate in English as well as teaching literacy and literature with the Peace Corps in Brazil.He has directed the English honors program and served on more than two dozen committees, many of which he chaired. He has been assistant dean of honors in the College of Arts and Sciences, a member of the advisory board of the Campus Y and secretary of the faculty.
- Alexander M. Goldstein of Chapel Hill made the dean's list for the fall semester at Bucknall University in Lewisburg, Pa. To make the dean's list, a student must receive a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher. Goldstein is the son of Burton and Kathleen Goldstein and a 2004 graduate of Paideia School in Atlanta, Ga.
- John David Bolas of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list for the fall semester at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. The make the list, a student must be ranked in the top 10 percent of the class or have a grade-point average of 3.75 or higher and take at least 12 semester hours.
- Allison H. Smith of Chapel Hill has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. To be eligible for the list, a student must achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average for the semester.
- Zachary P. Strom of Chapel Hill has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Bucknall University in Lewisburg, Pa. To make the dean's list, a student must receive a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher. Strom is the son of Ronald Strom and Catherine Pascal and a 2006 graduate of Carolina Friends School in Durham.
