Alexander R. Sereno of Carrboro was named to the dean's list in the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences for the fall semester at Clemson University. He is the son of Julian Sereno and Debbie Groves of Carrboro and Margaret Sereno of Westmont, Ill.

Joanna Michelle Craver of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Ga. To make the list, a student must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.0 and have a semester grade-point average of at least 3.5 with atleast nine hours of course work.

Samuel L. Odom, the director of FPG Child Development Institute at UNC-Chapel Hill, has received the 2007 Outstanding Research Award from the Council for Exceptional Children.
The award recognizes an individual or research team whose research has made significant contributions to the education of exceptional children and youth. The Council for Exceptional Children works to improve the educational success of individuals with disabilities and/or gifts and talents.

Edward Austin Webb of Chapel Hill has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C. To make the list, a student must be enrolled for 12 or more hours and attain a semester grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.

Hannah Hinkson of Chapel Hill has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. To make the list, a student must have a grade-point average of 3.5 or better and carry an academic load of 12 credit hours.

Gary Marchionini, Cary C. Boshamer distinguished professor in the UNC School of Information and Library Science, recently received the 2006 Contribution to Information Science Award of the Los Angeles chapter of the American Society of Information Science and Technology.

Pittsboro residents Emily Jessica Clark-Kramer, Sarah Elizabeth Erickson, Forrest Rader Mason and Marion Zaumseil Wing were named to the dean's list for the fall semester at UNC-Asheville. To make the list, a full-time student must have a grade-point average of between 3.5 and 3.99.

Lisa Bruckner, the daughter of Christte and Albrecht Bruckner of Chapel Hill, has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Macalester College. A graduate of East Chapel Hill High School, Bruckner is a first-year student at Macalester. To make the list, a student must have a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher.

Leslie Parkins, associate director for programs and leadership at UNC's Assisting People in Planning Learning Experiences in Service (APPLES) service learning program, has received the Annuit Coeptis Emerging Professional Award for her professional and scholarly contributions to higher education.
One of five individuals nationally to receive the award this year, Parkins will attend a formal ceremony at the ACPA's April conference in Orlando, Fla.
The ACPA is an international student affairs association with more than 8,000 members at 1,500 universities.

Allison M. Douglas of Chapel Hill has been named to the chancellor's list for the fall semester at East Carolina University in Greenville. A student named to the list must have a grade-point average for that semester of 4.0.

Jake Nichols of Chapel Hill has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. He is the son of Pamela Haines and William Nichols of Chapel Hill. To be named to the list, as student must have a grade-point average of 3.75 or higher.

Edward Lathrop Bullard, son of Melissa and Jim Bullard of Chapel Hill, was named to the dean's list for the fall semester at the University of Southern California. Edward recently was named a National Merit Finalist.

Yanping Zhang, assistant professor of radiation oncology in the UNC School of Medicine, has been named a Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Scholar. The five-year, $500,000 grant will fund research on a protein linked to leukemia and lymphoma. A mutated form of the protein appears in both diseases. Zhang's study of the protein's function will serve as the basis of further investigation of this protein as a molecular target for cancer therapy. Zhang is a member of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Nicholas C. Grose, son of Carol Grose, graduated in December from the University of Colorado in Boulder with a degree in economics. He is a 2002 graduate of Chapel Hill High. He is living in Denver, Colo., and working for The Woodbury Financial Services.
