  • Samuel Max Nackman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee R. Nackman of Chapel Hill, has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. To make the list, a student must achieve a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.
  • James N. Bates, son of Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Bates of Chapel Hill, has been named to the dean's list for the winter term at Furman University in Greenville, S.C. To make the list, a student must achieve a grade-point average of 3.4 or higher.
  • Christopher Parker of Chapel Hill recently participated in the Governor's Page Program in Raleigh. Christopher spent the week of March 5-9 gaining providing administrative support as a page for the N.C. Department of State Treasurer. Christopher is the son of Graham and Caroline Turner and is a junior at Chapel Hill High School.
  • David A. Hofmann has been selected to become the next associate dean for the MBA Program at UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School. He will succeed Valarie Zeithaml effective July 1. Hofmann is a professor of organizational behavior/strategy.

    Hofmann's research examines organizational climate, leadership, organizational change and modeling the influence of organizational factors on individual behavior and performance. He teaches courses in organizational behavior and leadership.

  • Catherine Belle Meador, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Keith G. Meador of Chapel Hill, has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. To make the list, a student must achieve a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.
  • Kaelin B.C. Alexander, son of Dale and Janice Alexander of Meadowfair Court in The Woodlands, has been named to the Merit List at Kenyon College for the first semester of the 2006-07 academic year. To be eligible for the recognition, a student must achieve a 3.45 grade-point average. He is a graduate of Chapel Hill High School.

    Jaclyn P. Holland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Holland of Chapel Hill, has been named to the dean's list for the winter term at Furman University in Greenville, S.C. To make the list, a student must achieve a grade-point average of 3.4 or higher.

  • Rachel Nackman of Chapel Hill has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Tufts University. To make the list, a student must achieve a grade-point average of 3.4 or higher.
  • Dr. J. Timothy Wright has been named the first Dr. James W. Bawden distinguished professor of pediatric dentistry within the UNC School of Dentistry.

    Wright is chair of the school's department of pediatric dentistry. Friends and colleagues of Dr. James Bawden, who was dean of the school from 1966 to 1974, established the endowed chair to attract or retain a distinguished teacher and scholar within the school's department of pediatric dentistry.

    Wright's research interests include the diagnosis and treatment of developmental abnormalities in teeth that result from hereditary and environmental conditions, and understanding normal tooth development.

  • Casey Raye Simmons, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond C. Simmons of Chapel Hill, has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. To make the list, a student must achieve a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.
  • Dr. Norman E. Sharpless, assistant professor of medicine and genetics at the UNC School of Medicine, has received one of 11 Clinical Scientist Awards in Translational Research by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. The five-year, $750,000 awards are intended to support established, independent physician-scientists who are dedicated to translational research -- the two-way transfer between laboratory research and patient treatment -- and mentoring physician-scientist trainees.

    Sharpless, a UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center member, will use the funds to support his research on the role of tumor suppressor proteins in stem cell aging.

  • Dr. Douglas A. Drossman has been honored for his contributions to gastroenterology through mentoring. The 2007 Mentors Research Scholar Award from the American Gastroenterological Association Foundation for Digestive Health and Nutrition will be permanently endowed in his name and the names of his fellow honorees.
  • Mallory C. House, daughter of Kathleen Harris of Chapel Hill, has been named to the dean's list for the winter term at Furman University in Greenville, S.C. To make the list, a student must achieve a grade-point average of 3.4 or higher.
  • Christine Lee Sailer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Scott L. Sailer of Chapel Hill, has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. To make the list, a student must achieve a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.
