The Beat Dook Parade rolls along Franklin Street before the UNC-Duke football game in 1949. Brothers of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity began the parade in 1933 to help generate spirit for that year's football game between the rival schools. The parade served not only as a pep rally but over the years as everything from a catalyst for the Black Power movement at UNC to a showcase for the local high school marching bands and the venue for the first public outing of 'Big Blue,' the Chapel Hill Fire Department's first all-Carolina blue fire truck. What other event is important to Franklin Street's history? Find out when Chapel Hill Museum's permanent exhibit on Franklin Street's history opens in October. In addition to welcoming financial contributions, the museum appeals to the community for photos, memorabilia and artifacts that help chronicle the story of Franklin Street.
