- Bo Zhang, a student at Chapel Hill High School, has received a $2,000 college scholarship in the Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition. Bo was among 60 high school students selected out of more than 700 entrants nationwide to compete in the finals held in Washington, D.C. The YES Competition is designed to spur interest in the field of public health, especially epidemiology.
- Six UNC students from Orange County have been inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most honored of all college honorary societies.The students are Kesson Eugenia Anderson, a senior international studies and psychology major, daughter of Charles Anderson and Nancy Easterling of Chapel Hill; Kristen Emily Anderson, a graduate with a degree in international studies, daughter of Alexander and Jennifer Anderson of Carrboro; Ana Hacic-Vlahovic, a senior political science major, daughter of Damir Hacic and Gordana Vlahovic of Chapel Hill; Xiaojuan Li, a senior chemistry major, daughter of Zhixiong Li and Yunfang Zhou of Chapel Hill; Malcolm Strachan Ross, a junior chemistry major, son of Derek and Rhona Ross of Chapel Hill; and Chris Elizabeth Tommerdahl, a junior environmental science major, daughter of Mark and Kathy Tommerdahl of Chapel Hill.Phi Beta Kappa membership is open to undergraduates in UNC's College of Arts and Sciences and professional degree programs who meet stringent eligibility requirements. Each new member received a certificate and a Phi Beta Kappa key, the organization's symbol.A student who has completed 75 hours of course work and has a grade-point average of 3.85 (on a 4-point scale) or better is eligible for membership. Also eligible is any student who has competed 105 hours of course work and has a 3.75 grade-point average. Less than 1 percent of all college students qualify to be members.
- Tova Boehm, an Earlham College junior and daughter of Nancy Luberoff and Bruce Boehm of Chapel Hill, performed in Earlham's spring orchestra concert on April 7 in Goddard Auditorium. Boehm is a member of Earlham's orchestra, which presented Gustav Mahler's "Songs of a Wayfarer" and Aaron Copland's "Appalachian Spring."
- Sarah Calhoun Jenny, daughter of Bradley and Susan Jenny of Chapel Hill, has been named to the president's list for the fall semester at Elon University. To qualify for the list, a student must no grade lower than A-minus in a minimum of 12 semester hours.
- Christina Synn, daughter of Wonhi J. and Eunhae G. Synn of Chapel Hill, has been named to the honor list for the fall semester at Oxford College, the two-year liberal arts division of Emery University in Oxford, Ga. To qualify for the list, a student must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.
- Maire A. Dekle of Chapel Hill has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, Pa. To qualify for the list, a student must achieve a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher, a B or greater in all classes and complete at least 15 credits.
- Elizabeth Basmajian of Chapel Hill has been named to the dean's list at Emory College, the liberal arts college of Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. To qualify for the list, a student must be in the top 20 percent of Emory College or have a 3.82 grade-point average or higher. She is a daughter of Daniel Basmajian and Pamela Kay Rhodes.
