Rachel A. McCook, a senior at Clark University in Worcester, Mass., was cited for her leadership in the All Kinds of Girls program, which mentors adolescents in Worcester Public Schools. McCook is vice president and co-director of VOX: Voices for Choices (Clark chapter) and is an advisory board member of Planned Parenthood of Central Massachusetts. She is the daughter of Marc McCook of Chapel Hill and the late Anne McCook. She is a 2003 graduate of East Chapel Hill High School.

Andrea Johnston of Chapel Hill received a bachelor's degree in biology from St. Andrews Presbyterian College during commencement exercises held on May 5 on the college campus in Laurinburg. She is the daughter of Carol Lee and Andy Johnson.

Will Stanley, a senior at Earlham College in Richmond, Va., presented research at Earlham in April. Stanley presented "The Arsenic Crisis in Bangladesh." He is the son of Faye and Chris Stanley of Chapel Hill.

Jennifer P. Long of Chapel Hill has been named to the dean's list at Northwestern University for the winter quarter of the 2006-07 academic year. To qualify for the list, a student must attain a grade-point average of at least 3.7.

Kyle Gamble of Chapel Hill has been named to the dean's list at Columbus State Community College for the winter quarter. To qualify for the list, a student must attain a grade-point average of 3 or higher and be enrolled for 12 or more credit hours.

Michael Kip Viscusi of Chapel Hill received a bachelor's degree in business administration from St. Andrews Presbyterian College during commencement exercises held on May 5 on the college campus in Laurinburg. He is the son of Kip and Cate Viscusi.

Air Force Reserve Airman Joshua L. Riley has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, Riley studied the Air Force mission, organization and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations. He is the son of Luke and Kelly Riley of Hillsborough.

Kaleb I. Keyserling has been named a summer science scholar for 2007 at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. Scholars are chosen in competition among student-faculty proposals. He is the son of Thomas Keyserling and Alice Ammerman of Chapel Hill and a graduate of East Chapel Hill High.

John J. Koniges of Chapel Hill received a bachelor's degree in computer science from Minnesota State University during commencement ceremonies May 12.

Kara Ann Smith of Chapel Hill has received the Gold National Scholarship from the University of Minnesota. The scholarship honors incoming students who have demonstrated exceptional academic performance and leadership. She will be a freshman in the fall and is the daughter of Mike and Jan Smith.

Andrew Hampton of Chapel Hill has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. To be named to the list, a student must attain a grade-point average of 3.6 and take at least 12 credit hours during the semester.
Katharine Putney, an Earlham College first-year and daughter of Barbara and James Putney of Chapel Hill, NC, is studying in Mexico this May. Putney is a member of the off-campus program "Intensive Spanish and Cultural Immersion May Term," which is designed for students to improve their Spanish language skills and to learn about the culture and history of Mexico. The course takes place in Cuautla, Morelos, Mexico, and ends on June 3.

Joseph B. Miller of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Georgia Southern University. To be eligible for the list, a student must have at least a 3.5 grade-point average and carry a minimum of 12 credit hours for the semester.

Statistician and researcher Donald W. King, co-founder of the survey research company Westat Inc., has been appointed a distinguished research professor at the School of Information and Library Science.
King has conducted 12 studies for the National Science Foundation. Other projects have included studies on consumer safety and surveys for ABC News and NBC. In 1976, King founded King Research Inc., which conducts information and communication services research. Since he retired from that firm in the mid-1990s, King has donated all of his research services, including his work at UNC.

Jackson Roush, professor and director of the School of Medicine's division of speech and hearing sciences, recently received the 2007 Presidential Award from the American Academy of Audiology. The award was presented to Roush "in grateful appreciation for his significant contributions to the American Academy of Audiology and the audiology profession," and in recognition of his leadership in expanding the quantity and quality of clinical externship sites and preceptors for doctoral students in audiology.

Bethany Nadolski, daughter of Keith and Chris Nadolski of Chapel Hill, received a bachelor's degree in business and equestrian studies from Averett University during a commencement ceremony this month.
