- The following students from Carrboro were named to the chancellor's list for the spring semester at Appalachian State University: William Paul Biggers and Mackenzie Ann Brough. To make the list a full-time student must attain a grade-point average of 3.85 or higher.
- Daniel Carpenter of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list for the winter term at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I. To make the list a student must attain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.4 or higher.
- David Schanzer has received an academic fellowship from the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies in Washington, D.C. Schanzer is an adjunct associate professor of public policy at UNC-Chapel Hill. Schanzer is also the director of the Triangle Center on Terrorism and Homeland Security, created in 2005 as a collaborative effort by Carolina, Duke University and RTI International. The center is based at Duke, where Schanzer is a visiting associate professor at the Sanford Institute of Public Policy.The academic fellows travel to Tel Aviv, Israel, for a 10-day course on terrorism, with lectures by academics, diplomats, military and intelligence officials, and politicians from Israel, Jordan, India, Turkey and the United States. The fellowship also includes visits to military bases, border zones and other security installations to learn the practical side of deterring terrorist attacks.
- The following students from Carrboro were named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Appalachian State University: William Paul Biggers and Mackenzie Ann Brough, Jonathan Steve Duran Arriola, Elizabeth Anne Norkus, Jason Edward Phillippi and Carlin Traugott-Campbell. To make the list a student must be enrolled for 12 to 14 hours of academic credit and attain a grade-point average of 3.45 or higher or be enrolled for 15 or more hours of academic credit and attain a grade-point average of 3.25 or higher.
- Megan Sullivan of Chapel Hill won the Most Vivacious title for North Carolina in the Miss Cheerleader of America competition May 6 in Charlotte. She is the daughter of Joann and Carl Sullivan and a 10th-grader at Chapel Hill High School.
- J. Robert Cox of Chapel Hill has been elected president of the Sierra Club. It is his third stint at the helm of the group. Cox is a professor of communications studies at UNC.
- The following students from Chapel Hill were named to the chancellor's list for the spring semester at Appalachian State University: Norma Elizabeth Daugherty, Kevin James Gamble, Shirley E. Law, Marie Kathleen McMahon, Elizabeth Ann McRainey, Kelsey Anne Melville, Cabe Charles Barnett Waldrop. To make the list a full-time student must attain a grade-point average of 3.85 or higher.
- David R. Work of Chapel Hill received an honorary doctor of humane letters degree from Wingate University during commencement ceremonies on May 12. Work is executive director emeritus for the N.C. Board of Pharmacy and has taught pharmacy law and ethics at UNC-Chapel Hill.

- Jared McCarthy, son of Gregory and Paula McCarthy of Chapel Hill, received a bachelor's degree in health promotion from Lynchburg College during ceremonies May 12.

Lee, Oliver Mikleen Mavor-Parker, Graham R. McGinnis, Chris R. McLennan and Tomasz Jacek Ziolkowski. To make the list a full-time student must attain a grade-point average of 3.85 or higher.
- Lucille Noel Dula, Susan Hallman, Betty June Hayes, Elizabeth Hays, Ann McPherson, Dolly Roberts, Grace Jean Roberts, Delores Simpson, Linda Lawson Safewright and Brenda Stephens received the Jerry B. and Callie Irene Stone Award on May 9. The awards were presented during the Elite Awards breakfast honoring those who have made great contributions to the betterment of citizens of Hillsborough.

- Tracey Booth Snipes received a doctorate in philosophy from UNC-Greensboro during ceremonies on May 11. She is the daughter of Leola Bynum Booth and the late Wescote Booth Jr. and graduated from Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools.
