• Julian F. Pinheiro of Chapel Hill has been selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars. He is a student at Chapel Hill High School. The society recognizes top scholars in the nation and invites students who have achieved superior academic excellence. He is the son of Teri and Frank Pinheiro.
• The following Orange County residents received master's degrees during commencement ceremonies at East Carolina University: Amanda Izquierdo and Frederic Rice.
• Margaret Howes Martin of Chapel Hill received a graduate degree from Salem State College in Salem, Mass., during commencement ceremonies May 17.
• Allison Marie Douglas of Chapel Hill has been named to the chancellor's list for the spring semester at East Carolina University. To qualify for the list, a student must attain a grade-point average of 4.0. She also received a bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing during ceremonies May 5.
• Warren P. Newton has been elected to a five-year term on American Board of Family Medicine board of directors. Newton is the William B. Aycock distinguished professor and chairman of the department of family medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The American Board of Family Medicine is the second largest medical specialty board in the United States. Founded in 1969, it is a voluntary, not-for-profit, private organization whose purposes include improving the quality of medical care available to the public.
• The following Orange County residents received bachelor's degrees during commencement ceremonies at East Carolina University: Christopher Adkins, Jason Bean, Ashley Brackett, Carmen Burkhart, Kyle Crane, Allison Douglas, Sarah Frost, Ashleylayne Hessee, Kevin Jarvies, Richard Johnson, Benjamin Lloyd, Aaron Mickelson, Lauren Murphy, Laura Thompson, Jenna Weber.
• Oliver Greene Radwan of Chapel Hill has received a Surdna Foundation Undergraduate Research Fellowship. Surdna fellows participate in undergraduate research projects under the direction of faculty members. Radwan is a student at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.
• Alexandra Zweig Vinegar of Chapel Hill has received a Best Buy Children's Foundation scholarship. Recipients are chosen based on community service and academic achievement. The value of the scholarships ranges from $1,500 to $10,000. Vinegar, a student at Chapel Hill High School, is the daughter of Sherrie Zweig and Richard Vinegar. She plans to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the fall.
• The following Orange County residents were named to the dean's list for the spring semester at East Carolina University: Christopher Adkins, Jason Bean, Ashley Brackett, Richard Johnson, Benjamin Lloyd and Jenna Weber. To make the list, a full-time student must have a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher with no grade below C.
• Brenda Malone, who is vice chancellor for faculty and staff relations at the City University of New York, will become Carolina's new associate vice chancellor for human resources effective Aug. 1. Malone succeeds Laurie Charest, who served as Carolina's associate vice chancellor for human resources from 1990 until she retired at the end of January 2007.
• As associate vice chancellor, Malone will oversee benefits administration, staffing, compensation, employee relations, training and development, Human Resources Information Systems, work-family programs and temporary staffing, with a central human resources staff of 75 and an annual $5 million operating budget.
• The following Orange County residents were named to the chancellor's list for the spring semester at East Carolina University: Carmen Burkhart, Allison Douglas and Laura Thompson. To make the list, a full-time student must make four grade points per credit hour with no incomplete grades.
