  • Melvin F. Beasley has been cited for his safety record and driving experience as a bus driver for the Orange County Schools. He was named bus driver of the year for Orange County Schools at a recognition program on May 3. According to the citation, Beasley has 14 years of bus-driving experience, an impeccable safety record, perfect attendance for the past several years, and a reputation for a superior work ethic. Beasley received a bonus check for $500. He drives for Cameron Park Elementary School, but has driven for all three school levels and is frequently sought out for field trips.
  • Thomas C. Liu of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Va. To qualify for the list, a student must attempt at least 12 credit hours graded on the A-F option and earn a 3.4 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) during the semester. Liu is a sophomore majoring in biological sciences.
  • Lee Miller-Finkel of Chapel Hill received a bachelor's degree from Denison University in Granville, Ohio, during commencement ceremonies May 13. He is the son of Alan Finkel and Carolyn Miller and is a graduate of Chapel Hill High School.
  • Megan M. Caplan of Chapel Hill was named to the honor roll for 2007 at Virginia Episcopal School. To make the roll, a student must have a grade-point average of 90-plus.
  • Grace E. Martin of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Va. To qualify for the list, a student must attempt at least 12 credit hours graded on the A-F option and earn a 3.4 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) during the semester. Martin is a sophomore majoring in biochemistry.
  • Diana Petty, the daughter of Sally Goerner and Jack Petty of Chapel Hill, has been named to the dean's list of Macalester College for academic achievement during the spring semester. A graduate of Chapel Hill High School, Petty was a sophomore at Macalester last spring. To be named to the list, a student must achieve a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher.
  • Katherine C. Mayock of Chapel Hill received a bachelor's degree in finance from Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, Pa., during commencement ceremonies May 12. She received the Spanish Award and was cited for completing eight courses in the honors program.
  • Luke O. Ellis of Chapel Hill has been named to the National Society of High School Scholars. He is a student at Woods Charter School.
  • Emma L. May of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Va. To qualify for the list, a student must attempt at least 12 credit hours graded on the A-F option and earn a 3.4 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) during the semester. May is a freshman majoring in biological sciences.
