  • Elizabeth Lanter has received the James J. Gallagher Dissertation Award from the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute at UNC-Chapel Hill. Her dissertation examined how early literacy skills develop in children with autism spectrum disorders. Lanter is a doctoral student in the UNC School of Medicine. She said she will use the $2,500 award to assist her study, including providing books for participants.
  • Arnav Tripathy of Chapel Hill has received a $5,000 scholarship from the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation. Tripathy was a student at East Chapel Hill High School. He plans to use the scholarship to attend Harvard University.
  • Mary Ann Fallon of Chapel Hill, chief operating officer of Copernicus Group IRB, was chosen as an industry rising star by the Healthcare Businesswomen's Association at its 2007 HBA Woman of the Year Awards held May 3 in New York City.

Nominated by HBA Corporate Partners, those receiving the Rising Star Award demonstrate outstanding performance and a commitment to excellence that contributes to their companies' success.
  • Vriti Munjal Jain of Chapel Hill recently served as a page in the N.C. Senate. She is the daughter of Shailendra and Sucheta Jain and a student at East Chapel Hill High School. During their week in the Legislative Building, pages attend Senate sessions and deliver bills and amendments to senators. They also have committee assignments and assist staff members with office duties.
  • Megan Cloutier of Chapel Hill received a bachelor's degree from Emory University during commencement ceremonies on May 14 in Atlanta, Ga. She is the daughter of Alfred and Kay Cloutier.
  • Kaleb I. Keyserling of Chapel Hill was named to the merit list for the second semester of the 2006-07 academic year at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. He is the son of Thomas Keyserling and Alice Ammerman. To make the list, a student must have a grade-point average of 3.45 or more.
  • Stephen Charles of Chapel Hill was selected to participate in the annual reading and scoring of the College Board AP Examinations in June in environmental sciences.

  • Shen Chen of Chapel Hill has been selected as a state winner of the Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship. Chen, a rising senior at East Chapel Hill High School, will receive a $2,500 award. Recipients are selected based on overall excellence in leadership and community service while overcoming a hardship or challenge. Winners must maintain a cumulative 2.75 or higher grade-point average.
  • Christina Synn of Chapel Hill received an associate's degree from Emory University during commencement ceremonies on May 14 in Atlanta, Ga. She is the daughter of Wonhi and Eunhae Synn.
  • Samantha Vaillancourt of Chapel Hill was named to the honor roll for the spring semester at St. Mary's School in Raleigh. She is the daughter of Michael Vaillancourt of Chapel Hill and Kim Pandick of Durham.
