  • Julia Eileen Howard of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C. She also was named an ITA-Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar, given to student athletes who have earned a varsity letter, have a grade-point average of at least 3.5 for the academic year and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.
  • James Gallagher received the 2007 Harry Passow Leadership Award from the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children. The international award recognizes a person whose life and work has significantly influenced policy and practices in gifted education and who has made an outstanding contribution in promoting the cause of gifted education worldwide. Gallagher is a former director and current senior scientist emeritus of FPG Child Development Institute and the Kenan professor emeritus at UNC-Chapel Hill.
  • The following students from Orange County were among recent graduates from N.C. A&T State University in Greensboro: Lennie W. Breeze II, Sandy Marie Cates, Ayanna Frierson, Carla D. Holloman, Antwuan Ja'Monte Riggsbee and Brandon T. Rogers.
  • Edward Lee Williams of Chapel Hill received a bachelor's degree from Denison University during commencement ceremonies May 13. He received the Dean's Award and was inducted into Phi Alpha Theta (history) and Sigma Delta Pi (Spanish) honoraries. He is the son of Ray Williams and Joan Lash and a graduate of East Chapel Hill High School.
  • Kimberly Raines, a post-doctoral student at UNC-Chapel Hill, has received a United Negro College Fund (UNCF)/Merck Science Initiative fellowship. Raines came to UNC in June and is a researcher in the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Fellows receive awards ranging from $25,000 to $85,000 each. Each fellow is paired with a mentor, a Merck scientist, who will provide research assistance and guidance. The Science Initiative also provides an institutional grant to the science department of the award recipient's university.
  • Stepanie Caracci of Chapel Hill received a bachelor's degree from Brevard College during commencement ceremonies in May. She is a kindergarten teacher in Brevard. She is the daughter of Blair and Linda Caracci.
  • Dunsin Alabi of Chapel Hill was named an honors student for the spring semester at Mercersburg Academy in Mercersburg, Pa. To qualify for honors designation, a student must have a grade-point average of 80-89.
  • Xiao Mclinton of Chapel Hill has been named a coordinator with Market America, which sells productes through the Internet and independent distributors. Mclinton developed two sales and distribution organizations to qualify for the recognition.
  • Matthew McGuire Jones of Chapel Hill was cited for his exceptional score on the ACT or SAT by the Duke University Talent Identification Program. Jones is an eighth-grader at St. Thomas More Catholic School.
  • The following students from Orange County were named to the dean's list for the spring semester at N.C. A&T State University in Greensboro: Michael E. Alberter III, Sentel D. Allen, Shantora D. Alston, Matthew Parker Edringston, Bryan Travone Evans, Candace Lillian Hackney, Alberta M. Hamn, Elizabeth M. Hines, Indiya S. Horton. Brandon T. Rogers, Erin Danielle Snyder, Shanel N. Wardsworth and Tabitha D. Webb.
