The Rashkis Elementary School Chess Team won the state championship in the K-5 section of the 2008 N.C. Scholastic Chess Championship. Team members include Dane Simon, Hans Singh, Benjamin Senior, Joshua Lai, Thomas Wang, Iyin Battle, Arnav Subramanya, Aninda Manocha, Nathaniel Lai and Jeffrey Williams. The club advisor is Carol Holmes. In individual competition, Dane Simon took second place, Hans Singh took fourth and Benjamin Senior won the 13th-place trophy. The K-3 team finished in eighth place; team members include Max Finklestein, Victor Zhao, Alex Broz and Bradley Clary. The K-1 team finished in fifth place; team members are Aneesha Manocha, Henry Fu and Felix Zhao.

- The following students from Chapel Hill have been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Western Carolina University: Brian Scott Graham, Carey Ridgway McKelvey, Courtney Ann Ryan and Michael Nolan Swikehardt. To qualify for the list, a student must have a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher and take at least 12 hours of course work.
- Lisa Norberg, director of public services for the UNC Library, is the 2008 recipient of the Marta Lange/CQ Press Award from the Association of College and Research Libraries. The award honors a librarian who has made distinguished contributions to bibliography and information service in law or political science. Norberg was named director of public services in 2006 after serving since 2000 as the library's coordinator of instructional services.
- Holly Williams, Brittany Beckwith, Emily Lancaster, Jonathan Stark and Karl Richard, all of Pittsboro, have been named to the president's list for the fall semester at Central Carolina Community College. To qualify for the list, a student must receive A's in all classes with no incomplete grades.
- Peter A. Leone, an associate professor in the UNC schools of medicine and public health, has been appointed to the board of directors of the National Coalition of STD Directors. The coalition is a partnership of public health professionals dedicated to the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. As a member of the board, Leone will serve a two-year term and will be involved in setting directions for the organization, drafting new guidelines and serving in an advisory capacity at the national level for STD policy.
- Christina Synn was named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Goizueta Business School of Emory University. She is the daughter of Wonhi and Grace Synn and a 2005 graduate of Chapel Hill High School. To qualify for the list, a student must have a 3.6 grade-point average or better.
- Gretchen Marie Niver of Pittsboro has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Western Carolina University. To qualify for the list, a student must have a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher and take at least 12 hours of course work.
- Nourish International of Chapel Hill has received the N.C. Peace Prize from the N.C. Peace Corps Association. The $1,000 award was presented to Sindhura Citineni, a UNC student who founded Nourish International in 2002. The prize is given to small North Carolina community-based nonprofit groups that help people to help themselves and promote peace and cross-cultural understanding.
- Sara Swartzwelder was named to the dean's list at Middlebury College for the fall semester. She is the daughter of Elizabeth and Scott Swartzwelder of Chapel Hill. To qualify for the list, a student must achieve a grade-point average of at least 3.3 and have no grade lower than a B for the semester.
- Mark Sumner of Chapel Hill has been named vessel examination officer for Chapel Hill Flotilla 98 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
- The following students from Hillsborough have been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Western Carolina University: Adam Douglas Graham, David Joseph Nemecek and Raymond Calvin Olive. To qualify for the list, a student must have a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher and take at least 12 hours of course work.
- Ian Hainline, son of Barbara Gittleman and Mark Hainline of Chapel Hill, has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Tufts University. He is a 2007 graduate of East Chapel Hill High School.
- Rob Cooper of Pittsboro has been named communication services officer for Chapel Hill Flotilla 98 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
- Susane Damasceno and Steven To, both of Chapel Hill, have been named to the president's list for the fall semester at Central Carolina Community College. To qualify for the list, a student must receive A's in all classes with no incomplete grades.
- Kathryn Olga Robinson of Carrboro has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Western Carolina University. To qualify for the list, a student must have a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher and take at least 12 hours of course work.
- The Great Atlantic Lacrosse Company in Hillsborough has donated $40,000 to the Wounded Warrior Project. The project aids severely injured U.S. service men and women. The money was raised through catalog and online T-shirt sales in November and December.
- The following students from Pittsboro have been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Central Carolina Community College: Morgan O'Daniel, Philip Cosentino, Susan Oliver, Olessia Maddox, Jessica Hill, Logan Barber, James Thorn, Toni Ellis and George Williams. To qualify for the list, a student must have a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher, take 12 semester hours and receive no grade of less than a C.
