  • Brittany McVeigh was the only student from North Carolina and one of 39 students in the United States to achieve the highest possible composite score in the ACT college entrance exam in December 2007. She is the daughter of Brian and Sheila McVeigh of Chapel Hill and a student at Chapel Hill High School. The exam is made up of tests in English, mathematics, reading and science.
  • Arnav Tripathy of Chapel Hill has been selected as a Putnam fellow by placing in the top six of the highest scoring individuals in the 2007 William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition. He received a $2,500 cash prize. He is a freshman at Harvard University and a graduate of East Chapel Hill High School. The competition has been given annually since 1938 and is administered by the Mathematical Association of America. About 4,000 students from more than 500 colleges and universities across the United States and Canada participated in the competition.
  • Melissa Golding has been named to the honor roll for the first semester at St. Mary's School in Raleigh. She is the daughter of Toni and Tom Golding of Chapel Hill. To qualify for the honor roll, a student must maintain a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher in four or more academic courses.
  • Kimberly Purcell has been named to the honor roll for the first semester at St. Mary's School in Raleigh. She is the daughter of Micky and David Purcell of Chapel Hill. To qualify for the honor roll, a student must maintain a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher in four or more academic courses.
  • Cameron Hughes performed in the Winter Choral Concert in March at Earlham College in Richmond, Ind. He is the son of Philip Hughes and Donna VanEngen of Chapel Hill.
  • Claire Anysie Wolff of Chapel Hill has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester in the College of Arts and Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. To qualify for the list, a student must have a semester grade-point average of 3.5 or higher and be enrolled in at least 14 graded units.

  • Cassandra Lee Short has been chosen to be in the Sigma Alpha Lambda National Leadership and Honors Organization at UNC-Greensboro. She is the daughter of Angela and Larry Short of Chapel Hill.
  • Diane Tyndall has been named to the honor roll for the first semester at St. Mary's School in Raleigh. She is the daughter of Kathy and Don Tyndall of Chapel Hill. To qualify for the honor roll, a student must maintain a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher in four or more academic courses.
  • Lauren Jane Sapikowski of Chapel Hill has been elected to membership in the Washington and Lee University Gamma of Virginia chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Membership in the organization is based on outstanding character and superior academic records.
  • Colin Egan has been named to the dean's list of Emory University in Atlanta. He is the son of Thomas and Lynn Egan of Chapel Hill. To qualify for the list, a student must have a grade-point average of 3.844 or better.
  • Sophia Sullivan has been named to the dean's list for the winter quarter at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind. She is the daughter of Deborah and Dwight Sullivan of Chapel Hill. To qualify for the list, a student must have a grade-point average of 3.3 or higher.
  • Hillary Margolin Superak of Carrboro has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. She is a graduate of Chapel Hill High School. To qualify for the list, a student must have a semester grade-point average of 3.6 or higher and be enrolled in at least 12 graded units.
