The Highlanders Rugby Club of Chapel Hill, the three-time N.C. high school champions, will be running a free clinic this summer for all interested rising sixth- through ninth-graders. The clinic will be a non-contact introduction to the sport, with instruction by members of the Highlanders and N.C. all-stars coaching staff and players.

The clinic will be 4-5:30 p.m. on June 16-17 and June 19 at the Chapel Hill Bible Church Soccer Field, located at the corner of Erwin Rd. and Sage Rd.

For more information contact Rob Futch at rkfutch@yahoo.com or Todd Fabec at tfabec@mindspring.com.

Ridgewood camps

The Ridgewood Swim Club of Chapel is offering two new summer day camps Hill in eastern Chapel Hill, open to the public. Its volleyball camps include "Introduction to Volleyball" for rising fifth- through seventh- graders June 16-20, and "Middle School Volleyball" Aug. 18-22. Both camps run 9 a.m. to noon.

RSC's "Mini Ballers Basketball Camp" for rising third- through fifth-graders also runs 9 a.m. to noon. It will be held June 23-27.

The cost of either volleyball or basketball camp is $55 for Ridgewood Pool members and $75 for others. A camp T-shirt is included. For details contact TomKrakow@juno.com or visit the club's web site at http://ridgewoodpool.org.

In the money

Lex Alexander of Chapel Hill carded a respectable three-day total of 211 at the unforgiving Cedarwood Country Club in Charlotte and finished ninth in the CGA's 23rd N.C. Senior Amateur Championship. His 11-over-par score, which earned him $237.50 in prizes, looked even better in light of zero competitors being able to stay in the red May 13-15 at Cedarwood. Gary Strickfaden of Pinehurst won with a four-over 217, and even the steady Paul Simson of Raleigh, the only golfer under par after two days, blew up with a 78 on the last day and finished tied for second with Bruce Middleton of Mt. Airy at 218.

Munroe Cobey of Chapel Hill also finished in the money, with a 229 for 22nd and $100 in prizes.

Alexander grew up in Charlotte and was a member of Wake Forest's 1974 NCAA championship team. Shortly after obtaining CGA senior status in 2003, he won the 10th North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship at Brier Creek Country Club in Raleigh. He's best known to locals here as the founder of 3 Cups.

Elsewhere, Hillandale's Cole Huckabee of Chapel Hill shot an 84-81--165 to finish 23rd at the Carolinas PGA Senior Open at Walnut Creek Country Club in Goldsboro.

Amateur standing

In sectional qualifying for the N.C. Amateur Championship, East Chapel Hill 2007 grad William Park just missed the cut Wednesday at Oak Valley Golf Club in Advance. The line fell at three-over-par 75, with 18 players advancing to the 48th Amateur Championship that will be played June 12-15 at Raleigh Country Club. Park's 38-38--76 tied for 19th.

Walk in Hillsborough

All pedestrians (and cyclists) are welcome to participate in Walkable Hillsborough Day, which is more like 'walkable half-day,' from 8:30 a.m. to noon June 7, starting at the Old Courthouse in downtown Hillsborough.

The guided walks and a family bike ride (helmets required) will leave from the Old Courthouse at 9 a.m. A 20-mile bike ride, coordinated by the Carolina Tarwheels Bicycle Club, will leave from the Visitors Center at 9 a.m. Participants in that bike ride should meet at 8:30 a.m.

After the walks and rides, participants will meet back at the courthouse at 10:30 a.m. for activities, prizes and refreshments.

Sunscreen, hats, suitable footgear and water bottles are suggested.

In the case of rain, the event will take place at the Masonic Lodge, 142 W. King St. The Old Courthouse is located at the corner of Churton and King streets. The Visitors Center is at 150 E. King St.
