The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools presented honors and awards to teachers and staff at the annual recognition banquet May 29 at the Carolina Club.

Gloria Woods-Weeks of East Chapel Hill High School was named the assistant principal of the year.

The following Teaching Chairs were named: Patricia Farrington, Phoenix Academy, Carol Ambrosio Award; Sally Merryman, Smith Middle, Elmo's Award for Excellence in Teaching Foreign Language or ESL; Karoline Mathewson, Ephesus Elementary, Sockwell Chair for Excellence in Teaching the Primary Grades; Heather Taxis, Scroggs Elementary, Neil Pedersen Teacher's First Chair for Excellence in Technology; Ann Collins, Culbreth Middle, Rashkis Chair for Excellence in Teaching Middle School Language Arts; and Michael Irwin, Chapel Hill High, Sullivan Chair for Excellence in Teaching High School English; Fiona Rae, Culbreth Middle, Glaxo Smith Kline Chair for Excellence in Teaching Middle School Science; Bernadette Woods, Carrboro High, Dean Smith New Teacher Award.

Teachers who received awards include: Rhonda Hairston Turner, Seawell Elementary, Valeria Daniels-Paddock Support Services Award; Terry Richards, Phillips Middle, Exceptional Children's Award for Outstanding Contributions as a Teacher; and Janice Webster, Smith Middle, Wilson and Edwin Caldwell Jr. Minority Student Achievement Award.

Thirty-three retirees were honored.

Retirees are: Rosanna Barbee, Chapel Hill High; Jeanette Blackwell, Lincoln Center; Rebecca Burke, Smith Middle; Barbara Butler, Chapel Hill High; Barbara Carroll, Carrboro Elementary; Carolyn Carver-Tann, McDougle Elementary; Gloria Davis, Estes Hills Elementary; Paul Fiorentino, Transportation Department; Nancy Fox, Glenwood Elementary; Ray Fredrick, McDougle Middle; Jesse Gibson, Phillips Middle; Maggie Harder, Estes Hills Elementary; Patsy Harrison, McDougle Elementary; Carolyn Hibbard Parker, Phillips Middle; Deborah Hill, Ephesus Elementary; Olivia Ludington, FPG Elementary; Mary Ann Maney, Smith Middle; Day McLaughlin, McDougle Elementary; Gail Murray, FPG Elementary; Pamela Henry Pate, Chapel Hill High School; William Foster Pegg, UNC Hospital School; Barbara Picornell, Ephesus Elementary; Lesley Pratt, Ephesus Elementary; Peggy Robinson, Transportation Department; Nancy Rodgers, Chapel Hill High; Stephen Scroggs, Lincoln Center; Connie Siewers, McDougle Elementary; William Slade, Chapel Hill High; Jerre Snider, McDougle Middle; Nancy Strunk, McDougle Middle; John Thomas, Chapel Hill High; Laura Walker, FPG Elementary; and Penny Weaver, Glenwood Elementary.

A number of staff members were also recognized for achieving milestones in their years of service to the district.

Mary Harris, a language arts teacher at Phillips Middle, has 35 years of service.

Employees with 25 years of service included: Sarita Allen-Medlin, Seawell Elementary; Karen Bell, Chapel Hill High; Anne Bradshaw, Ephesus Elementary; Lucille Campbell, Rashkis Elementary; Gloria Davis, Estes Hills Elementary; Katharine Everson, McDougle Elementary; Dianne Jackson, Glenwood Elementary; Robert Purdy, East Chapel Hill High; Sandy Sean Rasnake, FPG Elementary; Brenda Ankney Stephans, Carrboro Elementary; Joan Thompson, Transportation Department; and Mary Lin Truelove, Transportation Department.
