More than 100 performers will play on five stages this weekend at the 2008 Festival for the Eno, and a good number of them come from in and around Chapel Hill and Carrboro.

The annual festival happens Friday through Sunday at West Point on the Eno. It's in Durham, but every year a lot of local folks make the short drive east to enjoy the enormous variety of live music, dance, storytellers, arts and crafts, activities, food and, of course, summer heat.

All proceeds go to the Eno River Association to preserve and protect the river and its corridor.

The Dex Romweber Duo will kick off its summer tour with a show Sunday at the Eno festival. The duo is Dex Romweber, late of the psycho-surfabilly punk combo Flat Duo Jets, and his sister, drummer Sara Romweber.

If you miss them at the Eno this weekend, you can catch them at Mansion 462, 462 W. Franklin Street in Chapel Hill on July 11. After they wrap up the tour, they will head into the studio to record a new album, produced by local music man John Plymale, featuring Dex singing duets with Cat Power, Neko Case and Exene Cervenka.

Chapel Hill's popular The Old Ceremony, featuring frontman Django Haskins, will play Friday. The Old Ceremony calls its music "pop-noir," and others have tried various other labels, but although the band bears influences ranging from Frank Sinatra through the Beatles and beyond, nobody else sounds like quite like The Old Ceremony. Their acclaimed recent album, "Our One Mistake" even includes a song written in Mandarin Chinese.

Other performers with strong local links include the Jon Shain Trio, the Pratie Heads, Lightnin' Wells, the Stillhouse Bottom Band, storyteller Louise Omoto Kessel, Sweet By, the Apple Chill Cloggers and the Cane Creek Cloggers.

And there are dozens of other acts: Hobex, Chatham County Line, John Dee Holman, the African American Dance Ensemble, Claire Holley ... well, you get the idea.
