Preetha Nandi performed a solo BharataNatyam (Indian classical) dance recital on June 21 at the East Chapel Hill High School auditorium. Approximately 300 people attended the three-hour recital. Accompanied by live Indian classical music, the recital included rhythmic movements as well as intricate story-telling. According to Indian traditions, this event, known as Arangetram (“ascending the stage”), is a significant accomplishment indicating that the dancer has achieved the mastery of techniques and expressions as well as the stamina necessary for a solo dance recital in public. Nandi is a disciple of Sridevi Jagannath, director of the Laasya School of Dance and Music in Durham. She is ranked No. 1 in her class among the rising seniors at East Chapel Hill High School. She is the daughter of Kailas and Indrani Nandi of Chapel Hill.
