The Kaia Parker Fund for Young Dancers has awarded 2008 scholarships to, from left, Meghan Wilt, Kiara Felder, Katie Holt, Siobhan Cahill-Billings and Jessica Alexander. The fund recognizes students for their love of and commitment to dance, and the scholarship funds summer study programs. Wilt and Holt will study at the Joffrey South Workshop. Felder will study at Saratoga Summer Dance Intensive. Cahill-Billings will study at ADF, and Alexander will study at Interlochen.

  • Nicole Danita Farrar of Chapel Hill received a bachelor's degree in psychology/sociology during commencement exercises at Lenoir-Rhyne College in May.
  • Caroline Yachan, daughter of George Yachan of Chapel Hill and Gail Kent of Lake Mary, Fla., was named to the dean's list at Smith College for her academic achievement during the 2007-08 school year. Caroline is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emilio Yachan of Conyers, Ga.

  • Hasan Bhatti, a junior at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, was named to the dean's list for outstanding academic achievement during the spring semester of the 2007-08 year.

    Bhatti is the son of Shelah Bloom of Chapel Hill and Masood Bhatti of Chestnut Hill, Mass. An anthropology major, he attended East Chapel Hill High School.

    Students whose grade point averages are in the top 30 percent are named to the dean's list.

  • Charlotte Stewart, Nori Diesel and Savannah Guild have been named recipeints of awards presented by The Ballet School of Chapel Hill.

    Diesel was named the recipient of the Carol Richard Memorial Scholarship, given in memory of Ballet School partner, teacher, choreographer and Chapel Hill Dance Theater co-founder Carol Richard (1948-2007). The scholarship supports the studies or choreographic pursuits of young and aspiring dancers, particularly those with a passion for modern dance.

    Diesel is a dedicated dancer devoted to modern dance and is an outstanding performer. She recently graduated from Emerson Waldorf School and will study in Europe during the summer. She hopes to perform professionally in the future.

    Guild and Stewart were named recipients of the Alicia Land Award.

    Dedicated in memory of Chapel Hill Dance Theater dancer Alicia Land (1987-2004), the scholarship celebrates CHDT performers who demonstrate exceptional leadership, commitment, and generosity of spirit.

    Guild, a rising junior at Carrboro High School, will attend the Ballet Austin Summer Intensive.

    Stewart, a rising senior at East Chapel Hill High School, will study at the Carolina Ballet Summer Intensive.

  • Chapel Hill author Jean Anderson has won a Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance 2008 SIBA Book Award for her book, "A Love Affair With Southern Cooking."

    Anderson's book won in the cookbook category.

    The SIBA Book Awards celebrate the best of southern literature, as chosen by independent booksellers throughout the South.

    Books are nominated in five categories, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, cooking and children's.

    For a book to be eligible, it must be set in the South, and it must have been published within the calendar year.

  • David Schmoeller was named to the dean's list of Macalester College for academic achievement during the spring semester of the 2007-2008 school year.

    He is son of Margaret and Joe Schmoeller of Chapel Hill.

    A graduate of East Chapel Hill High School, Schmoeller was a sophomore at Macalester last spring.

    To be eligible for the dean's list a student must have been registered as a full-time, degree-seeking student and may not have been on a study away program. Furthermore, a student must have achieved a semester grade point average of at least 3.75, twelve or more credits on a regular grading option, no grades below C-, and no withdrawal or incomplete grades for the semester.

  • The Friends of the Carrboro Branch Library awarded Life Membership status to Boy Scout troop leader James Asbill and his troop 45 in recognition of outstanding contributions to the Carrboro Branch Library.

    The troop has worked for the past seven years to raise substantial funds for the library.

  • Army Reserve Spec. Danny J. Quick has been mobilized and activated for deployment overseas to a forward operating base in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

    Operation Iraqi Freedom is the official name given to military operations involving members of the U.S. armed forces and coalition forces participating in efforts to free and secure Iraq.

    Mission objectives focus on force protection, peacekeeping, stabilization, security and counter-insurgency operations as the Iraqi transitional governing bodies assume full sovereign powers to govern the peoples of Iraq.

    Quick, a healthcare specialist (combat medic) with five years of military service, is normally assigned 340th Military Police Company, Flushing, N.Y.

  • He is the son of Mary T. and Danny T. Quick of Bumphus Road in Chapel Hill. He is a 2003 graduate of Orange High School in Hillsborough.
  • Kristen Boreyko has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Meredith College in Raleigh.

    She is the daughter of John and Vicky Boreyko of Chapel Hill.

    To be named to the dean's list, a student must have a semester grade-point-average of at least 3.5 out of a possible 4.0, must have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours and passed all courses at Meredith.

  • Andrew Bonds of Chapel Hill was among the 42 members of the Class of 2008 to graduate from Saint James School on June 1.

    Bonds earned the "True Grit" award in 2007-08, presented to a senior athlete from each Washington County (Md.) school for determination and perseverance in overcoming an injury.

    Bonds injured his knee last spring while playing varsity lacrosse, but surgery and hard work brought him back in time to play varsity football this past fall. He then broke his collarbone during the 2007 football season, but recovered to be back on the field before season's end.

    He will attend Washington and Lee University. He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Mark Bonds.
