- Orange county artists are invited to apply for the Durham Arts Council's 2008-2009 Emerging Artists Grants (deadline is Sept. 18, 9 p.m.) Applications are at http://www.durhamarts.org or at www.artsorange.org. Hard copies are at the Orange County Arts Commission office, 110 E. King St., Hillsborough and at all Orange County libraries and the Chapel Hill Library.

- The Jesse Kalisher Gallery, 209 E. Main Street in Carrboro, will celebrate its grand opening this Friday, 6-9 p.m. "Art Watching," includes photographs taken around the world by Kalisher. - David Sovero's oil paintings are on exhibit at Fleet Feet Gallery, 406 E. Main Street in Carrboro, through Sept. 1. A reception to meet Sovero is scheduled for this Friday, 6-9 p.m.
- On exhibit at Wilson Library is "Satan in a Bottle: A History of the Production and Control of Alcoholic Beverages in North Carolina" through Aug. 31. "Hecho a Mano: Book Arts of Latin America," is on display through Oct. 12. On Aug. 27 at 5:45 p.m., Ambar Past will talk about Mayan bookmaking. - The Robert and Pearl Seymour Center, 2551 Homestead Road, is featuring "Master Color's Oil Paintings," works by center instructor David Sovero and his students through Oct. 1. - Siglinda Scarpa's Goathouse Gallery and Gardens will be open to visitors during the "Cats and Cookies" adoption event on Aug. 23, noon-5 p.m. All proceeds from pottery sales will be used to support the onsite cat refuge. www.goathouserefuge.org.

- "Larger than Life: A Close Look at Flowers and Faces," watercolors by Barbara Keighton, is at Market Street Books in Southern Village through August. Keighton does live watercolor portrait sketches around town and will be at Market Street Books in Southern Village Saturday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and Aug. 19, 3-6 p.m., and at the Last Friday Art Walk in Hillsborough on Aug. 29, 6-9 p.m., in front of the court house at 106 E. - The Ackland Art Museum is part of the 2nd Friday Art Walk and has live music. On exhibit are"In and Around the Garden, Perspectives East and West" through Aug. 31, "Glorifying Patronage: Art in Service of Family, Fame, and Fortune" through Aug. 17, "Contemporary Drawings from the Ackland Collection" through Aug. 17, "The Art of Love" through Sept. 7 and "Flowing Like Water: The Art of Liquidity" through Aug. 17. - Artwork from the Town of Chapel Hill's Permanent Collection is on exhibit at the Chapel Hill Public Library, 100 Library Drive, through Aug. 31. The library is open Mon.-Thurs. 10 a.m.-9 p.m., Fri., 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Sat., 9 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sun. 1-8 p.m.
- Main Street Gallery, 405 E. Main Street in Carrboro, will hold a reception Friday, 6-9 p.m., to open "The Trailing Garments of the Night," acrylic paintings by Eduardo Lapetina. The show ends Sept. 11. The gallery is open Tuesday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sunday, 1-5 p.m. 967-7005.
- "Nature's Splendor," a show of watercolors by David Stickel, is on exhibit at the North Carolina Botanical Garden's Totten Center through Oct. 31. Garden hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturdays and 1-6 p.m. Sundays. 962-0522. .
- Tyndall Galleries in University Mall is featuring new mixed-media paintings by Richard Garrison through Aug. 16. On Aug. 19, "Crossing Thresholds," a show of new paintings by Gayle Stott Lowry, will open. A reception is scheduled for Aug. 23. - New works by Chris Beacham and Karen Stone are at the Carrboro Century Center through August. The center is at 100 N. Greensboro St. and is open Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
- North American landscapes in pastel by Dan Vaughan are at the Carrboro Town Hall, 301 W. Main St., through August. Hours are Mon.-Fri., 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
- "Preservation: Paintings by Mary Charlton," is on exhibit at Panzanella restaurant in Carr Mill Mall in Carrboro through Sept. 29. A reception is scheduled for Aug. 11, 5:30-7:30 p.m. 929-6626.
- Animation and Fine Art Galleries at University Mall will show "Andre Masson-The Surrealistic Figure," through Thursday. A reception on Friday, 6-9 p.m. opens, "Chuck Close-The Self Portrait," which runs through Sept. 11. - The Preservation Society of Chapel Hill's new exhibit at the Horace Williams House opens Aug. 24 with a reception from 2-4 p.m. This exhibit of mixed-media collages by Joyce Watkins King ends Sept. 14. - "The Library's First Juried Painting Exhibition," is at The Carrboro Branch Library through Oct. 22. This exhibit, the third part of Elements of Visual Arts, features the work of 14 painters selected by Kenneth Rodgers, Director of the North Carolina Central University Museum and also a painter. The library is located in the McDougle Schools Media Center, 900 Old Fayetteville Road, Carrboro. - The ArtsCenter's center gallery is exhibiting work by Jenifer Padilla in "Making the Grass Greener 59 Days." The East End Gallery features work by Oleg Lulin, who is from Saratov, Russian, Carrboro's sister city, in an exhibit, "From Saratov, with Love." - The North Carolina Crafts Gallery, 212 W. Main St. in Carrboro, is featuring new acrylic paintings of pottery and more by Chapel Hill artist David Taylor. - The Open Eye Cafe, 101 S. - "Internet Resources for Creative Portfolios," is the topic for the Aug. 22 Artist's Salon, 6:30-9 p.m. at Carrboro's ArtsCenter. - The Hillsborough Gallery of Arts will show new paintings by Peg Bachenheimer, Lolette Gutherie, and Richard Knox through Aug. 23.
