- Zoe Rosenthal of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, as a result of her scholastic standing during the second semester of the 2007-08 academic year.To qualify for the dean's list, a student must maintain a better than B-plus average for the semester, for a minimum quality point ratio of 3.67.Rosenthal, formely of Stamford, Conn., is a sophomore majoring in politics. She was the editor of The Bates Student Arts and Living Layout in 2007-08. A 2006 graduate of Westhill High School, she is the daughter of Arnie Rosenthal and Carrie Klein.
- Justin Giersbrook of Chapel Hill attended the 69th American Legion's Tar Heel Boys State at Catawba College in Salisbury June 22-28.Tar Heel Boys' State is a leadership action program. Qualified male North Carolina high school rising seniors take part in a practical government course designed to develop a working knowledge of the structure of the government. Giersbrook is the the son of Jeff and Linda Giersbrook and is a senior at Chapel Hill High School.
- Rob McVicker has been named to the Dean's list for the fall and spring semesters at Campbell University. Rob is a 2007 graduate of East Chapel Hill High School and is attending Campbell as a Presidential Scholar.
- Drew McVicker has been awarded the Walter Hamilton Scholarhship from Amity Methodist Church. The scholarship is based on Christian character, community service and academic record. Drew is a 2008 graduate of East Chapel Hill High School and will attend Elon University in the fall.
- Grey Brown of Carrboro won first place in the Poetry of Love competition in the North Carolina Poetry Society's 2008 Adult and Student Contests.The honor was awarded in a day-long celebration at Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities in Southern Pines.
- Susan Willey Spalt of Carrboro was an honorable mention winner for the Joanna Catherine Scott Award in the North Carolina Poetry Society's 2008 Adult and Student Contests.The honor was awarded in a day-long celebration at Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities in Southern Pines.
- Debra Kaufman of Mebane was the first-place winner of the Mary Ruffin Poole Award and the second-place winner of the Thomas H. McDill Award in the North Carolina Poetry Society's 2008 Adult and Student Contests.The honor was awarded in a day-long celebration at Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities in Southern Pines.
- Alice E. Johnasen of Mebane was the third-place winner in the Poetry of Courage Award competition and an honorable mention selection for the Katherine Kennedy McIntyre Light Verse Award in the North Carolina Poetry Society's 2008 Adult and Student Contests.The honor was awarded in a day-long celebration at Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities in Southern Pines.

- Jonathan Adams of Chapel Hill was awarded a $1,000 Bonhomme Scholarship from The University of Montana.Adams is a sophomore at UM majoring in psychology. He is a 2002 graduate of East Chapel Hill High School and the son of David and Maureen Adams of Chapel Hill.
