PITTSBORO -- The 55 members of the Northwood High School Marching Charger Band wrapped up their second week of band camp with a preview performance for the band boosters on Aug. 22.

Band director Eugene Cottrell and new drum major Catherine Barthoff introduced Psychoses, an original marching program based on themes by Cottrell, and arranged by Brad Pearson with percussion arrangements by Amy Davis. Three movements comprise this year's program: Hallucinations, Delusion, and Paranoia.

The 2007 edition of the Marching Chargers brought home two grand championship trophies for their A/AA performances.

This year senior Andrew Southerland is featured in a haunting baritone solo in the second movement. Southerland was a member of last year's All-District Band.

"Robert Schumann was a nineteenth century composer, mostly for piano," Southerland said. "He played one of his compositions for an audience. A few members of the audience followed up his performance by asking him what the piece meant. In response, he promptly turned around and played the piece again.

Sometimes, the meaning of the piece is up to the listener and not necessarily the performer," Southerland said. "It's a gem of a solo, and I'm honored to play it."
