Program to prepare voters-in-training
The ArtsCenter's AfterSchool Arts Immersion program will implement a Voter-In-Training (V.I.T.) curriculum designed to provide children with a basic education about electoral politics and responsible citizenship. Afterschool Arts Immersion participants will engage in a new V.I.T. activity each Monday leading up to Super Monday, Nov. 3, when The ArtsCenter will host a mock election open to area youth. Voting booths will be set up at The ArtsCenter on Super Monday where elementary school-aged children in the Orange County area will be able to cast their vote for the offices of U.S. president, senate governor and lieutenant governor. "Given the excitement around this presidential election and the record number of registered voters, we see a great opportunity to present information about being an educated citizen," said Shirlette Ammons, children's onsite arts manager at The ArtsCenter. The V.I.T. curriculum includes activities such as "intro to voting," in which young artists choose their snack ingredients, and creating a "wishing tree," in which young artists generate ideas about ways to improve their community. In addition to the weekly V.I.T. curriculum for Afterschool Arts Immersion students, The ArtsCenter will also host a one-day V.I.T. Workshop open to all Orange County children ages 5-11. The workshop will be held Sept. 30 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The workshop is free, but pre-registration is required. On Nov. 3, voting booths will be set up at The ArtsCenter from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., during which time children can cast their vote. Although attending the V.I.T. Workshop is not required in order to vote on Super Monday, it is highly recommended. To pre-register for the V.I.T. Workshop, pick up a registration form at The ArtsCenter or download one from the Web site at www.artscenterlive.org. The ArtsCenter is at 300-G East Main Street in Carrboro.
