Roses to everybody who participated in RSVVP Day -- and especially to founder Irene Briggaman.

The 20th annual hunger-relief program took place last Tuesday at restaurants throughout the Triangle.

Briggaman launched the project in 1989. In the years since then it has become a local institution, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars to help those who need a hand.

The idea is simple: On one Tuesday each November, participating restaurants donate 10 percent of their proceeds to hunger-relief programs operated by the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service, Urban Ministries of Durham's Community Kitchen and the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.

The list of participating restaurants gets longer every year; it's gotten so it just looks bad if your establishment isn't on there. And local residents know the drill, too; many of us plan to eat out that day just to help.

Wonderful work by all involved. Hard times are especially hard this year, and every little bit makes a difference.

Raspberries to those folks who, apparently in the flush of victory after the election, made off with everybody else's Barack Obama yard signs.

A number of local residents said they found their signs missing in the wake of the election.

As we've mentioned, it's not unusual for people to swipe campaign signs during election season -- but usually they swipe the signs of the candidate they oppose. In this case, it seems, at least some of the people snatching Obama signs were Obama supporters in search of souvenirs.

Either way, it ain't right. Don't take other people's stuff.

Roses to Anne Mader, Karen Binder and Nancy Dotson, who 12 years ago launched the Cornucopia House Cancer Support Center, a community that offers support of all kinds to those whose lives have been touched by cancer.

Cornucopia House honored its founders at a celebration on Sunday.

Sooner or later, cancer touches almost everybody in one way or another. Cornucopia House serves countless people in myriad ways -- through classes, workshops, individual and group support programs, forums and much more -- to make that heavy load a little lighter.

Roses to the newly formed Carrboro High School D.R.E.A.M. (Daring to Role-model Excellence as Athletic Mentors) team organized by Coach Jennifer Crawford and student captains Alessa Lennon, Caroline Yarnell and Maddie Fallela.

The quartet visited Frank Porter Graham Elementary School on Halloween. They handed out treats and spoke to the younger students about leading drug-free lives.

Some 16 Carrboro High student-athletes completed six hours of training on Veteran's Day, and the new D.R.E.A.M. team members are planning more visits and presentations to other local schools.

Participants promote positive leadership skills and healthy lifestyles to elementary and middle school students.

Any time older students reach out to help guide the younger ones, it does our heart good.
