Linda Ruth Hendry

Linda Ruth Hendry, 55, died peacefully at home with family on Jan. 16, 2009, after an extended battle with cancer.

Linda's life centered on her family and friends, as well as her passion for photography and other hobbies. She was a fabulous photographer and captured the world in images. She was an avid birdwatcher and knew the songs and habits of hundreds of birds by name. She photographed and documented numerous flowers, insects, and landscapes. She captured the essence of people in her portrait photography.

Linda had an indomitable spirit that was not touched by the cancer. She would laugh until tears streamed down her face and all those around her were laughing too. Linda was the daughter of Patricia Lee Hendry of Wilmington, N.C., and the late Wallace James Hendry. She is survived by her husband Alan Gorrod of Greensboro; her sister-in-law, Janet Emmet, also of Greensboro; her sister, Laura Shmania of Chapel Hill and brothers Jeff Hendry of Augusta, Ga., and Jim Hendry of Bedford, Va., and numerous loving nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 1 p.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 2105 W. Market St, Greensboro. A reception will follow in the parish hall.

There will be a graveside service on Thursday, Jan. 22, at 1 p.m. at the Oleander Gardens cemetery in Wilmington, N.C.

David Passman

David Passman died in his home in Chapel Hill of colon cancer on Jan. 9.

Born in New York on July 17, 1932, he graduated from NYU and completed graduate degrees at Columbia University and City University of New York. David worked as a counselor and psychologist in the Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., school system and practiced private counseling in Westchester County. After retiring to North Carolina, he practiced marriage mediation and counseling. An avid tennis player, he taught and played tennis all his life. He loved people and was always keenly interested in their stories.

He is survived by his wife Linda; son Mark Passman and daughter Cathy Passman; two stepchildren, Mark Berniker and Julie Powell; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on March 14, 2009, at the Community Church Unitarian Universalist of Chapel Hill. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the North Carolina Botanical Garden for the Battle Park Fund.

Everett Wesley Cheek

Everett Wesley Cheek of 2328 Dairyland Road, Chapel Hill, died Monday, Jan. 19.

He was born on Jan. 5, 1924. He was a graduate of UNC and a retired dairy farmer who lived all his life in Orange County.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Hazel S. Cheek; daughter Jenny Fenton of Winchester, Ohio, and her husband, Doug; son Michael Cheek of Chapel Hill and his wife, Katie; sister Nancy Gaines of Chapel Hill; brothers Larry and Lewis Cheek of Chapel Hill, and grandson Leland Cheek.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. at the residence on Thursday, Jan. 22. No services will be held.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.

Charles M. Gibson Jr.

Charles M. Gibson Jr., 81, of Chapel Hill, passed away on Jan. 16, 2009, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on August 25, 1927, in Kingsport, Tenn., he was the son of the late Helen Black and Charles Merritt Gibson. He was a member of Dobyns-Bennett's basketball team that won the school's only state championship in 1945. After 14 months of U.S. Naval service, Charlie earned a bachelor's degree from East Tennessee State University, lettering his last two years with the basketball team. He taught and coached at a rural high school near Rocky Mount, N.C., and earned a M.Ed. at UNC in 1952.

Mr. Gibson had a 24-year career in educational publishing beginning with selling textbooks to school systems in North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Ultimately, he served as president of Instructor Publications and chairman of the Board of Dansville Press.

In 1979, he and his family moved to Chapel Hill, where he became an active member of University Presbyterian Church. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 6, an active participant in Shared Learning, Sr. MGA at Chapel Hill Country Club and volunteered at the InterFaith Council in Chapel Hill. He was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Gov. Holshouser.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ann McCoy Gibson, daughter Leigh Anderson and her husband John of Chapel Hill; son Charles M. Gibson III and his wife Angel of Meridian, Miss.; grandsons Scott and Will Anderson; and granddaughters Megan and Sarah Gibson.

A memorial service at University Presbyterian Church in Chapel Hill was to be held Jan. 19, 2009, followed by a reception at the church. In lieu of flowers a remembrance may be made to the charity of your choice.
