John Reeves Goldfinch

John Reeves Goldfinch, 58, died quietly on Jan. 24 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born Oct. 13, 1950, in Conway, S.C., to Melda Stevens Goldfinch and the late Albert Eugene Goldfinch, he grew up in Tabor City and later, Raleigh.

Goldfinch had been a managing director of Morgan Keegan & Co. Inc., a long-standing member of The Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Church, and a member of the founding Board of SECU Family House in Chapel Hill.

A loving husband and devoted father, John lived a rich and varied life. His love of his work, golf, hunting, fishing, swimming and long drives in the country provided him with much pleasure. He loved to laugh and had many friends, and was a mentor and teacher to many young people. He will be remembered for his humor, even in the most difficult times, and his deep reflections about the nature of life, love, and faith.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 35 years, Carolyn Churchill Bertie Goldfinch; his son, John Reeves Goldfinch, Jr. (Jay) and Ann Holland Hughes, to whom he is engaged to be married; and his daughter, Martha O'Byrne Goldfinch and William Allen Aldridge II, to whom she is engaged to be married. He is also survived by his brother, Rev. Albert Eugene Goldfinch and his wife, Teresita; and his sister, Melda Goldfinch Dyer.

A memorial service was held Jan. 28, at the Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Church in Chapel Hill, followed by a reception at the church.

The family requests that memorial gifts be directed to their choice of charities or to SECU Family House in Chapel Hill or UNC Lineburger Cancer Center specified for pancreatic cancer research.

Robert "Rob" MacMillan

Robert "Rob" MacMillan, 82, of Happy Hill Road, died Jan. 24 at Smoky Mountain Healthcare.

A native of Raleigh, he grew up in Chapel Hill before living in Haywood County the past 22 years. He was a son of the late W. Dougald III and Laura Thompson MacMillan and is survived by his wife of 22 years, Mary McCrea MacMillan. Rob retired in 1985 from E. F. Hutton as a stockbroker with 25 years of service and was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in World War II and the Korean Conflict.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Robert MacMillan Jr. of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Gaston MacMillan of Berkeley, Calif., and John MacMillan and his wife Emily of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one stepson, N. J. "Chip" Brown of Baldwin, Ga.; two daughters, Giles MacMillan and Laura Adams, both of Wilmington, N.C.; one stepdaughter, Natali Ann Brown of Waynesville; a twin brother, W. Dougald MacMillan IV and his wife Victoria of Fayetteville, N.C.; 10 grandchildren, Daniel and Laura Adams, Kathleen Bissonnette, Clara, Emma, Elizabeth, Duncan, Stuart, Sophia and Raechel MacMillan; two stepgrandchildren, Cadence and Glynis Brown, and one great-granddaughter, Kayla Elizabeth Adams.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 6 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Canton. Inurnment will follow at the Greenhill Columbarium with military services conducted by VFW Post 5202 and the American Legion Post 47. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.

Clarence "Dinky" Barnes

Clarence "Dinky" Barnes, 58, of Chapel Hill died at UNC Hospitals Jan. 17.

He was the owner of Barnes Grading Co.

A funeral service was held Jan. 31 at Lystra Baptist Church with pastor Virginia Taylor officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Surviving are his wife Linda Barnes; mother, Margie Barnes of Chapel Hill; sisters, Louise Jordan of Chapel Hill and Diane Eubanks of Durham; brothers, Henry Barnes, Jaffey Barnes and Larry Barnes of Chapel Hill, Troy Barnes and wife Rose of Carrboro.

Barry H. Margolin

After many years of illness, Dr. Barry H. Margolin, 66, died at his home in Chapel Hill on Jan. 28.

A native New Yorker, he graduated summa cum laude from City College of New York and received his Ph.D at Harvard University. He was a faculty member in the Department of Statistics at Yale University for 10 years, and published widely in the area of experimental design. He came to North Carolina in 1977, and served as a mathematical statistician and head of the statistical methodology section at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in Research Triangle Park.

In 1987, he joined the UNC School of Public Health as professor and chairman of the Department of Biostatistics; in 1989, he also became the director of the biostatistics facility at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, and served in those capacities until 1997, when declining health forced him to step down.

Barry also brought his talents and energy to his community. A member of Beth El Congregation in Durham, he served as president of the Durham-Chapel Hill Jewish Federation and co-founder of the Jewish Community Foundation of Durham-Chapel Hill.

Mourners include wife Connie, daughter Lauren, sister Diane Kressner and her husband Mark, sister-in-law Roberta Morris, niece Sara Goldfarb and her husband Michael, nephew Lyon Kressner, many cousins, and former students and colleagues around the world.

Funeral services were held Jan. 30 at Howerton-Bryan Funeral Chapel, 1005 W. Main St. in Durham. Interment was at the Durham Hebrew Cemetery.

Harriet T. Horney

Harriet T. Horney died peacefully at home Jan. 17 at the age of 99.

She was born Nov. 21, 1909, in Greensboro, N.C., to Frank and Lillian Terwilliger, married the late Giles Foushee Horney in 1933 and moved to Chapel Hill. In addition to being a founding member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, she was also a founding member of the PTA Thrift Shop. She enjoyed her last 75 years spending time with family and friends in Chapel Hill and her beach cottage.

Surviving are her two daughters, Harriet (Drew) Melvin and Jane (Jim) Davis; two sons, Giles F. Horney Jr. and Bill (Joan) Horney; nine grandchildren, Lillian M. Matthews, Andy Melvin, Billie (Wesley) Grigg, Jennie L. Horney, Rebecca (Daniel) Smith, Zach (Ashley) Edmister, Matt (Meredith) Edmister, Sarah E. Edmister, Stephen (Kylie Ball) Edmister; and four great-grandchildren, Christopher Melvin, Austin Smith, Grayson Grigg, and Katherine Edmister.

Funeral services were held Jan. 21 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church with the Rev. John G. Durbin officiating. The burial was at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Catholic Community of St. Thomas More, Building Fund, 940 Carmichael St. Chapel Hill, N.C. 27514.
