The Ash Wednesday service tonight at Hillsborough United Church of Christ, 200 Davis Road, will be meditative and reflective and will offer participants opportunity to seek ways to be closer to God during the season of Lent, which continues in the church until Easter Sunday.

The table in the middle of the worship space will be covered with an array of items, all with symbolic meanings: terra cotta pots, a basket of bulbs, dirt, water, strips of paper, a candle, a plate with bread and a cup with juice. Also, ashes from the burning of last year's palm fronds used on Palm Sunday. All these items come together in a 30-minute symbolic service.

This service at 7 p.m. is intergenerational, so all ages are welcome.

The church on Davis Road is about a half-mile south of I-40.
