On Sunday, I'm going to be walking with hundreds of other people on the four-mile CROP Hunger Walk to raise money to feed the hungry.
I am one of the people who will be helped by the money that is raised. I eat three meals a day at the Community Kitchen of the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service. I have been living on the streets for the past three years. Without the IFC, I don't know where I would be eating.
I love to work. I used to do metal framing, and I was able to stack and cut the materials to keep six journeymen busy. I loved what I did, and I was good at it. But in 2002, I got hit by a car. I felt fine so I shook the guy's hand and let him go. And a month later, the pain started and I landed in hell. My life is no longer the same.
I had one back surgery in 2005. And by the time this article is published, I will know if I'm going to need another one. I filed for disability in 2002, but I'm still waiting for it. I was told to file again and am so tired of the walls and doors I face. It's a neverending story, and I keep hearing no.
This will be my third year with the CROP Walk. I try to collect money from churches and the community and to let people know what it's all about: No one should go without food.
I help out at the IFC's Community Kitchen about one to two hours a day and have been doing that for two years. I unload cars and trucks full of food. The IFC allows me to eat and shower, so I try to give back by helping and giving my time.
If everybody cared even a little bit, our world would be a much nicer place.
The CROP Walk is important because we come together as a community. You can see how many care and think this Walk is important not only to us but to the people we are helping.
Not only do the Community Kitchen volunteers give their time to feed us, they talk to us. It's not just an assembly line; people take time to talk to people. Everybody has a story of why they are at IFC.
You never think it's going to happen to you until it happens. And once it happens, it's a life-changing experience.
