Jennifer Rose Kueffer of Chapel Hill has been awarded the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting.

For her Gold Award Project, Kueffer wanted to educate fellow students about the recent election and politics She created a political awareness club at Chapel Hill High School. The club hosted a mock vote in which nearly 1,000 students participated. They also organized early voting marches to encourage parents to vote.

Chelsea Guild, Teen Miss North Carolina, ran in the 5K Great Human Race on March 21 to raise money for the Masonic Home for Children of Oxford. She was the recipient of the Youth Grand Prize Award by the Volunteer Center of Durham given to the individual 18 years or younger who raised the most funds overall. Guild raised over $3,600 and was part of the Little Miss North Carolina Team that received a Top Ten Award out of the 120 participating non-profit agencies. Forty children who are residents of the Oxford Home for Children walked in the event. Guild is a 2008 graduate of Chapel Hill High School and a freshman at East Carolina University.

Army Reserve Pvt. Darnell M. Shiver has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, SC.

Shiver is a 2001 graduate of Chapel Hill High School.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Victor G. Baillif has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX. He earned distinction as an honor graduate.

Baillif is a 2004 graduate of Orange High School in Hillsborough.

Army National Guard Spec. Blake T. Law has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

He is the son of Reed Law Jr. of Sweeten Creek Road, Chapel Hill. Law graduated in 2002 from Cresset Christian Academy, Durham, and received a bachelor's degree in 2006 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Lynette Fuse Mason is attending the spring session of the Junior National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. She is a 7th grader at Smith Middle School.

Two young students of the Ballet School of Chapel Hill have been chosen to attend American Ballet Theater's Young Dancer Summer Workshop this summer in New York City.

Katherine Belle Davis, 11, and Sadie Elisabeth Emch, 10, were chosen from thousands auditioning nationwide. The two will be among 175 students attending the prestigious two-week workshop.

Katherine is the daughter of Kearney and Diane Davis. Emch is the daughter of Michael and Sheryl Emch.
