Mary Barbara BickellMrs. Mary Barbara Bickell, of Fearrington Village, Pittsboro, died Sunday evening, April 26, 2009, at Rex Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center of Raleigh.A memorial service was held on May 1 at University Presbyterian Church in Chapel Hill.Mrs. Bickell was born in Hammond, Ind., on May 5, 1930, to the late Gladys Winchester Cochrane and Archibald John Cochrane.She studied piano and home economics at Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in home economics from Purdue University in 1952.She traveled extensively and enjoyed the opportunity to live with her husband and children in Antwerp, Belgium, and Cairo, Egypt, during different times of her life.Mrs. Bickell is survived by her husband of 56 years, Paul Bickell of Fearrington Village; son, John Bickell and grandson, Andrew Bickell of Sandusky, Ohio; daughter, Barbara Manson, son-in-law, Pete Manson, and granddaughter, Isabel Manson, of Cary; brother, John Cochrane and his wife, Anne Cochrane of Oak Park, Ill.; nieces Kristine Cochrane of Schererville, Ind., and Susanna Decker of Oak Park, Ill. Also surviving are her cousins Marianne Cochrane of Oberlin, Ohio, and Jack Cochrane of Amherst, Ohio.To continue her love for animals, contributions may be made to the ASPCA.Harold Franklin GoodmanHarold Franklin "Frank" Goodman, 81, of Rock Springs Church Road, Pittsboro, died April 28, 2009, at UNC Hospitals following several years of declining health.Frank was born in Iredell County on April 13, 1928, a son of Harvey Goodman and Nora Josey Goodman. He was retired from the construction industry, where he had worked as a truck driver. Frank was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church in Pittsboro.Survivors include his sisters, Eva Riddle and Faye Hart, both of Mebane, Irma Ellis of Pittsboro, and Mary Sanders of Chapel Hill; and a brother, Hugh Goodman of Pittsboro. Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Hackney Goodman.A service to celebrate Frank's life was conducted on April 30, 2009, from the graveside at Bynum United Methodist Church Cemetery. The Reverend Bob Wachs and Mr. Charles Grob presided.Visitation was April 29 at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, Griffin Chapel, in Pittsboro and at other times at the residence of Irma and Charles Ellis.Memorials may be directed to the Bynum United Methodist Church Women's Prayer Group, c/o Irma Ellis, treasurer, 6181 U.S. 15-501 North, Pittsboro, NC 27312.Online condolences may be made at www.hallwynne.com.Arrangements for Mr. Goodman are under the care of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, Griffin Chapel, Pittsboro.Gudrun GrossGudrun "Goodie" Gross, 87, died peacefully on April 17 at the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home in Palmyra, Pa.Born January 27, 1922, in Berlin, Germany, the beloved daughter of the late Felix Weber and Martha H
nsler Weber, she worked as a secretary, survived the bombing of her home, became a refugee fleeing the Russians and finally was reunited with her family in Witten-Annen. After the war she worked there for a British company as a secretary, assisting with interpretation and foreign correspondence. She married her American pen pal, Richard Gross, in 1951, emigrated to Cherryville, Pa., in 1952 and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1955.Besides her husband of 57 years, she is survived by her daughter, Monika Gross, and son-in-law, Tom Dessereau, of Manhattan; her son, Wolfgang Gross, of Melbourne Fla.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Alzheimer's Disease Research (www.ahaf.org) or the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home (www.lvbh.org), to which the family is grateful for her good care. A celebration of Gudrun's life and happy spirit will be held at the family home in Elizabethtown, Pa., on June 20.
