Virginia Hare Bettman
Virginia Hare Bettman, 91, died April 28 at Carolina Meadows.
Born in New Jersey, she was the oldest child of Kenneth R. and Gertrude S. Hare. Virginia graduated from Morgan Park High School in Chicago and from the University of Wisconsin. She was a member of the honorary societies Sigma Epsilon Sigma, Mortar Board and Phi Kappa Phi, and of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority.
She married Roland David Bettman Jr. in 1942, and had four children. She was a devoted wife and mother and was very active in Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and church activities. She was an avid tennis player, winning a Texas senior Olympics championship while in Houston.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband Roland and by her brother, James H. Hare, who died in the Philippines in World War II.
She is survived by her four children: James Ross Bettman and wife, Joan, of Chapel Hill; Carol Bettman Hebbe and husband, John, of Fairfax Station, Va.; Joan Bettman Williams and husband, Todd, of Scituate, Mass.; and Roland David Bettman III and wife, Katy, of Unionville, Ind. Also surviving are seven grandchildren: David Bettman, Kirsten Hebbe Blazey, Christopher Hebbe, Kevin Hebbe, Megan Hebbe, Kimberly Williams Mulcahy and Keith Williams; and three great-grandchildren: Bernard Mulcahy, Shane Mulcahy and Artimus Hebbe.
Memorial service arrangements are pending.
Elizabeth Urbanski McGowan
Elizabeth (Betty) Urbanski McGowan died April 30 at Carol Woods Retirement Community in Chapel Hill at age 86.
Born in Erie, Pa., and raised in Warren, Pa., Betty has been a Chapel Hill resident since 1949. She worked at the UNC School of Business for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David F. McGowan Sr.
Betty is survived by six children: Ann Abarno and husband, Bob, of Raleigh; David F. McGowan, Jr. and wife, Carol, of Wilmington; Emily Birgel and husband, Buddy, of Warren, Pa.; Beth Lineberger and husband, Jim, of Winston-Salem; Bill McGowan of Chapel Hill; and Meg Gardinier and husband, Gordon, of Chapel Hill. She is also survived by six grandchildren: David F. McGowan III, Jennings McGowan Lathan, Caitlin Lineberger, Laura Lineberger, Sam Birgel and Maggie Birgel.
A family memorial service will be in Pennsylvania at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials be made to The Salvation Army or to the Carol Woods Retirement Community Charitable Fund, 750 Weaver Dairy Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.
Clarence Pace
Clarence Pace, 94, former civic and business leader and head of the General Electric small appliance manufacturing operations in Asheboro, died at home in Chapel Hill Thursday.
Having received his bachelor's degree in engineering at Virginia Tech, he joined Stinson Aircraft in Fort Worth, Texas, during World War II to build warplanes. After the war, he worked for General Electrc in Princeton, N.J. and New York.
He moved to Asheboro in 1959 to manage the GE small housewares division.
Mr. Pace had many community leadership roles, notably as a member and chairman of the School Board of the Asheville City Schools.
He is survived by Mrs. Pace and their children, Rebecca Pace of Plattsburgh, N.Y., Jimmy Pace of Raleigh and Pamela Pace Heavner and spouse Jim Heavner of Chapel Hill; one grandson, Alex Pace of Goldsboro; and a nephew, Lewis Guy of Norfolk, Va.
A family reception will be held at Asheboro Country Club on May 13 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Mr. Pace asked for memorial gifts to go the Asheboro Public Library, which he loved dearly. An avid reader, Mr. Pace enjoyed a good book late into the evening before he passed away peacefully in the early morning hours.
