CHAPEL HILL -
In the market for a futon with the faint odor of cheap beer?
Some gently-used flip-flops? Some khaki pants? A dorm fridge plastered with He's Not Here stickers?
Now's your chance.
UNC's housing office is trying to do something productive with all the detritus left over when students blow town for the summer. So they set up donation stations in every residence hall complex and have encouraged students to drop off anything they don't want to take home with them.
The goods will be sold -- at bargain-basement prices -- on Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a UNC facility on Municipal Drive off Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The sale will be held in a municipal garage and will proceed even if it rains.
"A lot of good stuff, reusable stuff, finds its way into the dumpster," said Larry Hicks, the university's director of housing and residential education. "It will be a good opportunity for the community to find some good stuff for pretty little money."
The event is dubbed Tar Heel Treasure, and the proceeds go to two charitable organizations. The profits from the sale go to the Eve Marie Carson Scholarship Fund, named for the slain student body president. And all items left unsold will be purchased by a company who buys bulk loads like that on the cheap. Those proceeds will go to the N.C. Children's Hospital.
A few ground rules:
•If you're donating clothes, fold them. Nothing stained or torn, and of course, no underwear. If you're donating shoes, tie them together.
•No bed pillows or foam mattress cushions.
•Carpets are OK if they're cleaned, rolled and tied.
•Furniture and appliances should be in working order.
