The ArtsCenter's Youth Performing Arts Conservatory will highlight its programs and young performers next week with Theatre Jam, a week of free classes and performances.

The conservatory -- YPAC for short -- is a performing arts program for students in grades 1 through 12. Begun in 2005, the program offers classes and workshops in subjects including acting fundamentals, musical theater, improvisation, audition techniques, on-camera acting and more.

Theatre Jam will open Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. with an Open House, offering a day of free theater classes for prospective students. Classes will be available throughout the day while parents will be invited to observe and attend a short information session led by Jeri Lynn Schulke, director of YPAC.

"We are looking for input from students and parents on what they would like to see offered through our program," Schulke said. "For instance, are students interested in a class on performing magic, puppetry, directing or playwriting? We are hoping that the YPAC Open House will offer us the opportunity to start a dialogue with students, parents and theater instructors alike."

The Open House will be followed by a series of showcase performances by the current YPAC classes. Performances will be presented at various times from May 19 through May 22 at The ArtsCenter. Showcase performances are free.

The week's events will conclude with the YPAC All-Star Talent Show at 7 p.m. May 22. Conservatory students will perform for gifts and prizes, and to raise money for future scholarships. A donation of $5 ($2 for students) is suggested; all proceeds will go to the YPAC Scholarship Fund.

All events will be held at The ArtsCenter, 300-G E. Main St., Carrboro. Information and a complete schedule are available at 929-2787, ext. 219 or ext. 240, and at www.artscenterlive.org.
