Bill Kreutzmann was cut from his band class in sixth grade because, the teacher told him, "You can't keep a beat." Maybe not, but he managed to go on and play drums for the Grateful Dead for their entire 30-year run. The Dead are no more, but Kreutzmann has a new project, a trio called BK3, and he'll bring the group to the Cat's Cradle, 300 E. Main St., Carrboro, Thursday night. BK3 has shape-shifted among various lineups; past members have included bassists Oteil Burbridge of the Allman Brothers and Mike Gordon of Phish. This year's version includes Kreutzmann, bassist James "Hutch" Hutchinson of Bonnie Raitt's band and guitarist Scott Murawski of Max Creek -- and they're bringing along a special guest, Tara Nevins of Donna the Buffalo. You might hear some familiar echoes; BK3's material includes a dozen new songs he co-wrote with Robert Hunter, lyricist for the Dead. The Brew will open. Showtime is 9 p.m. Tickts are $18 in advance, $21 the day of the show. 967-9053, www.catscradle.com.
