Chris Ponder threw for a career-high 395 yards and three touchdowns to help Florida State rally from a big second-half deficit and beat North Carolina 30-27 on Thursday night, a game that could be as much momentum-builder for the Seminoles (3-4, 1-3 ACC) as a morale-killer for the Tar Heels (4-3, 0-3). FSU's Rod Owens added career-highs of nine catches for 199 yards, including a 98-yard score that was the longest scoring play in the history of Kenan Stadium. Down 24-6 early in the third quarter, Ponder led the ACC's top offense to a stunning rally against the nation's third-ranked total defense, including the go-ahead 18-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Beau Reliford with 6:20 to play. "The talk that we've had down there, there's only one thing that solves it. Winning," said Bobby Bowden, who's been hectored by critics this fall. "Play close and fight your guts out? Who cares? You've got to win."First QuarterUNC: Little 5 run (Barth kick), 11:30.FSU: FG Hopkins 48, 5:09.UNC: Barham 13 pass from Yates (Barth kick), 2:28.Second QuarterUNC: FG Barth 34, 9:26.FSU: FG Hopkins 26, :00.Third QuarterUNC: Yates 10 run (Barth kick), 11:38.FSU: Easterling 6 pass from Ponder (Hopkins kick), 6:12.FSU: Owens 98 pass from Ponder (Hopkins kick), 4:41.Fourth QuarterFSU: FG Hopkins 40, 12:12.UNC: FG Barth 26, 7:27.FSU: Reliford 18 pass from Ponder (Hopkins kick), 6:20.Team Statistics | FSU | NC |

TENNISNCHSAA 4-A Dual-Team TournamentFirst round, Tuesday, Oct. 20, at ECH
East Chapel Hill blew by Athens Drive in the first round of the NCHSAA 4-A and, for once, didn't draw undefeated Raleigh Broughton as a second-round match. That seemingly unavoidable head-banging of the Triangle's top two tennis programs might have to wait until the third round this year. First, East has to host Tri-Nine champion Green Hope (19-2) in the second round. Tuesday's winner gets to host either Broughton (16-0) or Durham Riverside (13-3).

NCHSAA 3-A Dual-Team TournamentFirst round, Tuesday, Oct. 20, at Goldsboro
CHHS, seeded No. 2 out of the Carolina-Nine 3-A Conference, traveled to Eastern Wayne last week and eliminated the Eastern Carolina Conference champions in a 6-0 sweep -- showing yet again that the NCHSAA's pre-determined draw has its limitations. The Tigers (13-5) didn't give up a set to the host Warriors. CHHS must now go to undefeated Thomasville Ledford (11-0) on Tuesday for the 3-A's second round. The winner there moves on to face either Carolina-Nine champion Cardinal Gibbons (21-4) or perennial 3-A power Burlington Williams (17-2) in the third round.

NCHSAA 2-A Dual-Team TournamentFirst round, Tuesday, Oct. 20, at Pittsboro
Northwood's No. 1 doubles team Claire Pauley and Catherine Shachtman pushed their season record to 16-0 last week to highlight the Chargers' 9-0 win over North Johnston in the first round of the NCHSAA 2-A dual-team playoffs. Both Pauley and Shachtman also won their singles 6-0, 6-0, as Northwood gave up just 13 games overall in singles and doubles. The Chargers next host Swansboro (16-4) in the tournament.

NCHSAA 2-A Dual-Team Tournament
First round, Tuesday, Oct. 20, at Roanoke Rapids
The Carrboro Lady Jags tennis team won their first dual-team tennis playoff match on Tuesday, despite their top two singles players being out with illness. The Jaguars won all six of their singles matches, four of which went to third-set tiebreakers. "It was a great team effort," coach Patti Fox said. Carrboro heads to Fairmont (11-4) for Tuesday's second round.
