CARY - Perhaps the only thing better than playing for a state championship team is coaching your old school to a title.

Susan Taylor, who graduated from East Chapel Hill in 2002, has done both. Saturday at Cary Academy, the Wildcats edged arch-rival Chapel Hill 1-0 in double overtime to cap Taylor's first year as East's head coach.

"It was fantastic," Taylor said.

Taylor, who teaches math at East Chapel Hill High School, was an assistant coach for last year's team but missed the 2008 championship win over CHHS because of a family obligation. "I wasn't going to miss it this time," she said.

East Chapel Hill (19-2) and Chapel Hill (17-3), which had split their regular-season matches, appeared destined for penalty strokes as time wound down in their second overtime. But, as Chapel Hill failed to clear from its own circle, forward Helen Newton got off a shot from just inside the circle, and Sophie Laas-Nesbitt scored on the rebound off the CHHS goalkeeper's stick.

Laas-Nesbitt's second game-winner over CHHS in just more than a week gave East Chapel Hill its sixth straight N.C. Field Hockey Association state championship since 2001.

Newton was named to the NCFHA all-state team, selected before weekend's championship, and was joined on the team by senior classmates Rachel Henke (defense), Samantha Anscher (center midfielder), Christina Freiberger (midfield)and goalkeeper-of-the-year Kaori Sueyoshi.

Taylor was named NCFHA coach of the year.

Chapel Hill High School also placed four on the all-state team: seniors Anna Long (center mid) and Caroline Williams (midfield), sophomore Jessica Barfield (forward) and junior Kelsey Buckley (forward).
