Have you examined the just-released Education First NC School Report Card, 2008-09? As a parent at Estes Hills Elementary, I am appalled; the latter may be designated as "School of Distinction," but exactly who are the high performers?
According to Estes Hills' Report Card, among children grouped as "White," greater than 95 percent passed both Reading and Writing End-of-Grade Tests, mirrored district-wide with 94.8 percent.
But, if my children cannot be "White," then I'd rather they be "Students with Disabilities," of whom 69.6 percent passed both tests (49.2 percent district-wide), or just "Economically Disadvantaged", with a 39.8 percent passing rate (48.3 percent district-wide), but by no means "Black," among whom merely 36.6 percent passed (47.7 percent district-wide)! Why have we failed this group?
There have been new computers, Smart-boards and other technical advances. But without a socially sensitive educational program targeting children whom we systematically leave behind, we can never stop repeating patterns of injustice for our coming generations. See
