Paving Bolin Creek greenway will drive away native wildlifeWhen UNC had an ecological assessment done of the Chapel Hill North Forest, the Bolin Creek corridor was classified as most suitable for conservation because "disturbance will compromise ecological integrity."
So what will happen if the Bolin Creek trail is paved? The "quagmire" of flooded trail in the spring, is in fact, a thriving vernal pool. When the trail's ruts fill with water, a temporary pool is created. Spotted salamanders, toads, and frogs lay their eggs in the safe haven. The creek itself is not as suitable because fish will eat the eggs and larvae.
We should understand that some flooding is a good thing. As the water spreads out over the wetland by the trail, it is filtered of pollutants, and nutrients spread through the soil. How can we even consider paving near a wetland?
Let us also consider that the greenway is supposed to provide viewing areas for wildlife. The paving will drive out the very wildlife we are supposed to be observing.
The great horned owl that hunts the forest cannot tolerate close proximity to humans. It requires a deeper forest.
The pileated woodpeckers that nested near the creek banks last year will move away. Even the peaceful box turtle enjoys a morning soak in those shallow trail pools.
Finally, let us recognize that the Bolin creek corridor is a natural treasure in an otherwise developed area. It is not a city park pond that holds a handful of domestic ducks. It is a thriving forest and wetland that is home to hundreds of species of animals.
At the center of it all is our hero, the beaver. This animal is creating new wetlands all along the Creek. He depends upon the now undisturbed banks for food and shelter. The beavers are also doing their part to control invasive species like Privet. If we want to improve Bolin creek, hand it over to the beavers. Let them be the masters of our waterways.
