CPYFL FOOTBALL: Registration is continuing for the Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department's tackle football leagues for participants in the following groups, with ages as of Aug. 1 this year: Pee Wee League (for ages 7-8, players can weigh no more than 115 pounds); Mite League (ages 9-10, maximum weight 135 pounds); and Midget League (11-12, maximum weight 150 pounds). The fee is $55 for Orange County residents, $92 for out-of-county residents. Registration forms must be signed by a parent or guardian and are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Birth certificates are required to participate. Carrboro Rec teams play in the Central Piedmont Football League, which comprises 20 organizations from Central North Carolina. Participants will begin practice in late July with games beginning in September. The season runs through late October.

Carrboro is also seeking volunteer coaches for all age groups for the fall season. Coaches' applications and player registration is being accepted currently at the Recreation Department, located at 100 N. Greensboro Street in Carrboro and via the town's web site at www.townofcarrboro.org. For more information, call 918-7364.

SKATEPARK OPEN: The Skate Park and Batting Cage at Homestead Park, located near the intersection of MLK Blvd. and Homestead Road, is open 3-8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 3-9 p.m. on Fridays; 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays (for beginners only); noon to 9 p.m. on Saturdays (normal session); and noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays. The Skate Park fee is $7 for residents of Chapel Hill and Orange County or $8 for others. Batting Cage fees are $2 for 25 pitches. REC FOOTBALL: The Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department has opened registration for its fall semester football program. Chapel Hill fields teams that play in the Central Piedmont Football League, which competes with teams from the surrounding area, including Chatham, Alamance and Randolph counties. Practices start in August, and games in September. The Youth Team (ages 5-6) play flag football and costs $50 for Orange County resiudents, $60 for others. Chapel Hill's three older programs (for ages 7-8, 9-10, 11-12) play tackle football and cost $60 per player from Orange County, $72 for others. Registration will remain open until the teams are full. A birth certificate is required before play. Registration can be done at the Parks and Recreation office on 200 Plant Road, or on the department website, www.chapelhillparks.org. BULLDOGS JUMPING CAMPS: The Bouncing Bulldogs jump-rope team will host week-long camps, open to all area youth, Aug. 9-13 and Aug.16-20. The sessions last 8 a.m. to noon each day and cost $200 per week. They will also host a "mini-camp" Aug. 23-24 ($80) -- 8 a.m. to noon. ORANGE TENNIS: Summer camps with the Orange Tennis Club are open each week in July for all ages and skill levels; campers will be grouped based on their ages and skills. Information about dates and times is on the club Web site at www.orangetennisclub.com.

PHYSICAL EXAMS: Triangle Orthopaedic Associates in Durham, and both Orange Family Medical and Family Centered Healthcare in Hillsborough will continue to offer reduced-cost physical exams for middle and high school athletes. These would be applicable for any summer of fall sport this year. The appropriate forms from the prospective athlete's school must be signed by a parent or guardian, and past medical histories must be attached.

USGA VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: The USGA is looking for volunteers for the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship will be played Aug. 9-15 at Charlotte Country Club. For information on how to take part, check out the USGA note at carolinasgolf.org/

NCLL GEAR: The North Chatham Cardinals lacrosse programs have a variety of equipment and athletic wear available at reasonable prices. More information can be found at www.nccardinals.com.

TENNIS TRYOUTS: Tryouts for high school girls' tennis teams will begin Monday, Aug. 9. CHHSwill begin at 8:30 a.m. and run to 10:30 a.m. daily until the team roster is set. East Chapel Hill will hold tennis practice from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Wildcat Tennis Stadium. For more information at East, call 969-2482. All players must have a physical in order to practice.

RIDGEWOOD VOLLEYBALL: This summer, Ridgewood Swim Club will host its Middle School Volleyball camp from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 16-20. This session is designed for those with some previous volleyball experience and entering 7th or 8th grade in the fall. The camp costs $85 ($65 for members of Ridgewood Swim Club).
