Brooks, Ward do well in Dogwood

Cary's Sarah Bae captured her first CGA championship last week by edging Emily Brooks of Chapel Hill for the Dogwood State Junior Championship. Bae, a rising high school sophomore, finished the three-day tournament on Thursday in Holly Springs with a total of 7-over-par 223. Brooks, a rising junior at Northwood High School, made up six shots on Bae's 36-hole lead with a final round of even-par 72 for a 226 total.

Bae joins her younger brother Eric as a CGA champion. Eric won the N.C. Junior Boys' 13 and Under Championship last month.

Cedar Ridge junior Casey Ward (229 total) took fifth, behind Victoria Allred of Pfafftown and Salisbury's Madison Kennedy, who tied for third at 227.

Maggie Denny of Chapel Hill totaled 246 to tie two others for 13th.

In the boys' tournament, Benjamin Griffin had his first over-par rounds in almost a month, and they cost him a couple of spots. With almost no time off since winning the World Teens championship at Pinehurst, Griffin carded 72-75-75--222 to tie for 11th at the Dogwood

On the first hole of a playoff, Will Thomas of Cary (213 total) made a two-putt par and took the title over N.C. State signee Andrew Decker of Greenville.

Other top finishers in the Dogwood included Chapel Hill High junior Emma Marlatt, who tied for 25th among the girls. Cole Curis of Chapel Hill, who tied for 12th in the Boys' 12-13 Age Division. Sibling Justin Curis tied for 21st in the Boys' 14-15 Division.

High school junior Matthew Braxton of Hillsborough tied for 50th in the Boys' 16-18s.

Harris in Henderson

Former East Chapel Hill coach Darian Harris has taken over as the head coach at Northern Vance.

Harris, who taught business and marketing classes at East Chapel Hill High School, left last spring after some teaching positions were sliced in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro system.

He takes over in Henderson from Cedric Crudup, whose Viking teams over the last four years went 13-32 overall and 7-13 in the Carolina-Nine 3-A Conference.

Harris' new post means he'll be back in Chapel Hill this fall. His Vikings open Carolina-Six play Oct. 8 at Orange High and then visit Chapel Hill High School on Oct. 15.

Fall basketball clinic at Woods Charter

Woods Charter School in North Chatham will host a weekly Youth Hoops Basketball Clinic this fall for boys and girls ages 8-15. A Wednesday session will run Sept. 8 through Oct. 20; a Saturday session will run Sept. 11 through Oct. 30.

Tuition costs $149 per player.

Led by coach John Berry, each 75-minute session will be devoted to developing individual skills, including ball handling, shooting, passing, screening and man-to-man defense. Each player will receive "hands-on" experience as they go through various drills aimed at teaching the proper techniques of basketball, says Berry.
