Army Pvt.
Heather K. Flores has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.
During the nine weeks of training, Flores studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics.
Flores is the daughter of
Barb and stepdaughter of
Mark A. Sproul of Efland.
Matthew Gay of Chapel Hill was named to the Dean's List for the third semester in a row at Appalachian State University. He is a senior in the Walker School of Business, majoring in marketing, and is a 2007 graduate of East Chapel Hill High School.
Meghan Gay of Chapel Hill was named to the Chancellor's List for the third semester in a row at Appalachian State University. She is a sophomore majoring in technical photography and is a 2009 graduate of Chapel Hill High School.
Gary Williams, son of
Buck and Anne Williams of Chapel Hill, has been selected to co-host a new TV morning show called "Morning Drive" on the Golf Channel. He is a veteran sports broadcaster and lived in Chapel Hill in the mid 1990s, when he was an assisant golf pro at The Governors Club.
The show will originate from Golf Channel's Orlando, Fla., headquarters. Golf conversation will lead the way, but the show will also feature news and commentary about stories making headlines around the world, finance and pop culture.
Stefan Alexander Garval of Chapel Hill participated in the Governor's Page Program in Raleigh. He spent a week gaining valuable life experience and providing administrative support as a page for the Office of the Governor.
The Governor's Page Program provides students with an opportunity to gain knowledge of the roles and functions of state government. During the week, pages have a chance to attend press conferences, meet with the governor and assist in day-to-day office operations. Some of their responsibilities include filing documents, assisting in mass mailings, answering telephones and delivering agency messages.
Anthony P. Gualtieri of Chapel Hill has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester of the 2010-11 academic year at Bucknell University.
A student must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a scale of 4.0 to receive dean's list recognition.
Gualtieri is the son of
Camilo and Frances Gualtieri of Chapel Hill, and is a 2008 graduate of East Chapel Hill High School.
UNC graduate
Vonnie Holliday, a former member of the Tar Heels football team and a current NFL player, was named one of the Top 10 Black Celebrity Philanthropists of 2010 by
Blackgivesback.com.
Holliday was a key part of the Tar Heels' defensive unit from 1994 to 1998. He was co-captain in 1997-98. He is 13-year NFL veteran who plays defensive end for the Washington Redskins.
He beat out names like Russell Simmons, Mary J. Blige and Usher to claim the number 2 spot on the philanthropy list. Only Antwan "Big Boi" Patton, one half of the hip-hop duo OutKast, fared better than Holliday.
Holliday's efforts to raise money to support brain cancer research were among the reasons he was selected.
In 2001, he founded The Vonnie Holliday Foundation to improve the quality of life in underserved communities. Details on his initiatives are available on his foundation Web site,

Four local students graduated from Mount Olive College in the fall 2010 commencement ceremony.
