Armadillo Grill edged Ghost Riders, 8-7 last Tuesday, to nudge them one game out of first place and help Milltown take the No. 1 seed in this week's upcoming Carrboro Co-Rec Softball tournament.

Milltown locked up the Carrboro Recreation and Parks' regular-season race with a 10-5 win Thursday over the Fightin' Squids. That was Milltown's ninth straight win since a 14-5 loss April 28 to Ghost Riders. The stretch run included a 9-7 victory over Ghost Riders on May 24, locking the two in a tie for first place until last Tuesday.

Milltown finished the spring at 12-2; Ghost Riders were 11-3. Bread & Butter (10-4) closed the regular season with five straight wins and pushed ahead of the Nightmen (9-5) for third place.

The Carrboro Recreation and Park's double-elimination tournament starts Tuesday at Anderson Park.

Collette, Glasser win Maddry Scholarships

Bill Collette of East Chapel Hill High School and Adam Glasser of Carrboro High School have been selected as the 2011 recipients of the Coy Maddry Memorial Scholarship Award from Orange United Methodist Church.

Both will be recognized at worship services this morning at Orange UMC, where they are active members, and each student will receive grants of $1,000 from the church.

The scholarship comes from the fund established by family and friends in memory of Avery Coy Maddry, a 1990 graduate of Chapel Hill High School and a freshman at North Carolina State University at the time of his death at the age of 18 on Jan. 7, 1991. The fund is in its 21st year, administered through Orange UMC, where Coy was an active member.

Collette earned eight varsity letters during his East career, four in cross-country and four in outdoor track. He's also an Eagle Scout, with a weighted GPA at East over 4.3, and will be attending N.C. State in the fall.

Glasser co-captained both the Carrboro cross-country and track teams, and also played basketball and lacrosse during his high school career. A member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society, he also served as co-editor in chief of the Carrboro yearbook. He will be attending the University of North Carolina in the fall.

The scholarship candidates must be varsity athletic letterwinners at a Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools high school who best exemplify Coy's life through qualities he demonstrated: hard work and dedication, strong academics, and exemplary character and leadership as reflected in church, school and civic activities. Coaches and teachers nominate candidates for the honor.

Leeper qualifies for upcoming N.C. Amateur

Carrboro High alum Rich Leeper finished strong last week in qualifying at the Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro to earn a spot in the CGA's North Carolina Amateur Championship. Leeper, now a rising junior on the James Madison University golf team, carded an even-par 72 Wednesday to lead a pack of six golfers tied for 11th place in the one-day qualifier.

Leeper bogeyed the first and ninth holes, but rallied immediately after making the turn with a birdie on the par-4 10th hole. He also birdied the par-3 17th to finish 2-under on the back nine.

Greg Earnhardt of Greensboro was medalist, with a 68.

The N.C. Amateur will be June 16-19 at the Greensboro Country Club's Farm Course.

Outdoor pool now open

Just in time for the heat, Chapel Hill Parks and recreation has opened the A. D. Clark Pool at Hargraves Community Center for the summer season.

Located at 216 N. Roberson St., the pool will be open from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday until June 12, when another schedule will be announced.

The outdoor facility at Hargraves is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.

Bocce raises $10K for Sustainable Community

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce raised $10,000 through its fifth annual Community Bocce Tournament, which was held May 26 at The Farm, a.k.a., the UNC Faculty-Staff Recreational Association. Funds raised at the tournament will support the initiatives of the Foundation for a Sustainable Community.

Local attorney Jeffery Allen Howard's team won the tournament, defeating a YMCA team that included YMCA program director Whitney Kahn and former schools assistant superintendent Steve Scroggs in the championship game.

Team Howard ended on top of 45 teams that played a series of five round-robin games; the eight teams with the best win-loss ratios advanced to vie for the 2011 title in a single-elimination tournament.
