Juniors do well in Carolinas event

Northwood golfer Emily Brooks of Chapel Hill got as far as the First Flight semifinals last week before bowing out of the CGA's 55th Carolinas Junior Girls Championship in Elgin, S.C.

Local favorite Kelli Murphy of Elgin, playing on her home course at the Members Club at Woodcreek Farms, won the CGA championship title Thursday over Allison Emrey of Charlotte, with a 1 Up victory.

Brooks carded a 77 in stroke-play qualifying and then defeated Greensboro's Lane Gakeler, 2 Up, in match play before losing, 1 Up, to eventual flight champion Katie Kirk of Davidson.

Cedar Ridge's Casey Ward and Chapel Hill pre-teen Gina Kim both shot 81 in qualifying and were seeded into the Second Flight. Ward went to the 20th hole of her first match before taking out South Carolinian Morgan Webber and then defeated Taylor Allison of Elizabeth City, 2 Up in the semifinals, before losing to Kelsey Badmaev, of Blythewood, S.C., 2 & 1 in the championship match. Badmaev reached the final by defeating Kim 2 & 1 in the semifinals; Kim had beaten Emily Stinson of Charlotte 3 & 2 in the flight's quarterfinal.

Emma Marlatt of Chapel Hill came back after losing her first match in Flight Three to take two matches and win her consolation bracket.

Correction

The photo that ran with the CHN article June 26, 2011, about the Carrboro co-rec softball championship incorrectly identified the Bread & Butter catcher, who should have been identified as Natalie Collins.

Greenway closed

Chapel Hill's Umstead Park and its adjacent Tanyard Branch greenway trail will close on Tuesday and remain closed through December during an OWASA sewer replacement project. Drivers, cyclists and others are encouraged to use alternate routes around the sewer project. Currently, Umstead Drive is closed between Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and Umstead Park.

OWASA's contractor also plans to close the intersection of Village Drive and Umstead Drive from mid-October through mid-November.
