CHAPEL HILL - Southern Vance only had to hold on for 30 seconds to walk away with a come-from-behind victory over Chapel Hill. Instead, the Tigers took advantage of the Raiders' 10th penalty of the game to set up a 55-yard pass from quarterback TJ Johnson to Stephen Winsor as time expired, giving the Tigers a wild 17-12 win on senior night.

Friday night's victory at Culton-Peerman Stadium keeps Chapel Hill alone in second place in the Carolinas-Six 3-A Conference.

"I told the seniors before the game I would do whatever I could to get them a win," said Johnson, a 6-3, 240 junior. "I was hoping the defense would shift toward RJ (Quick) and when they did, I saw Stephen, and he caught the ball."

Just seconds earlier, the Tigers had been almost in tears after blowing an 11-0 lead they held with 9:32 left in the game.

The Raiders, having given CHHS all its points off turnovers, had gotten a break of their own in the fourth quarter when a Tiger defender tipped a pass by quarterback Devonte Henderson; Tyekwan Peace caught the ball off the deflection and streaked 55 yards for a score. A failed two-point attempt left the margin at 11-6 with 4:20 left.

Southern Vance then recovered a CHHS fumble on the ensuing possession and took its first lead on a 4-yard run by Henderson. Another missed two-point conversion still left the Raiders ahead by one with 29.8 seconds left.

Some fans were already heading for the exits when a pass interference call on Southern Vance on a last-minute throw stopped the clock and gave the Tigers one last chance.

"We have an excellent kicker in Andrew Dejong, and so we were just trying to get in position for a field goal," CHHS coach Issac Marsh said.

Dejong accounted for Chapel Hill's 3-0 halftime lead with a 33-yard field goal in the second quarter, but he wasn't needed in the second half. An 11-yard TD run by Kenyon Ross, followed by two-point conversion run by sophomore Darius Allen put CHHS up 11-0.

Next: Chapel Hill (9-1, 3-1 conference) attempts to lock up the Carolina Conference's No. 2 seed when the Tigers travel to Hillsborough for a game Friday at Orange (5-5, 2-2).
